SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) is Questlove’s documentary about Sly Stone and Sly & The Family Stone. It traces the band’s rise, influence and fadeout while examining the pressures and costs of success for Black artists in America, a theme emphasized in the film’s official synopsis.

The band’s catalog provides a route into that story. Its official website highlights songs including “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “Family Affair,” “Stand!” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime.” The site also describes the group’s music as crossing pop and R&B. These tracks offer a listening companion to the film, not a substitute for its historical and personal account.

SLY LIVES! premiered on Hulu in the United States on February 13, 2025, following its selection for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Onyx Collective says its titles stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally; availability can vary by country, so check the catalog for your location. Hulu lists the 2025 title as a documentary/music movie directed by Questlove and rated TV-MA. Its page also lists a commentary cut and a featurette. Streaming availability and catalog details can change.
Who appears in the documentary?
The announced contributors include musicians and industry figures as well as people close to Stone. Hulu names Andre 3000, D’Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, George Clinton, Ruth Copeland and Clive Davis, alongside bandmates and family members.

Sly Stone is not interviewed in the film. In an interview published by Disney, producer Joseph Patel said, “It would have been great to interview Sly Stone but, for health reasons, we weren’t able to.” Patel said the team searched for archival interviews instead. That is Patel’s account of the production.
Is there a soundtrack on CD or vinyl?
Yes. Legacy Recordings announced the SLY LIVES! Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in digital, CD and LP formats. The digital edition was released February 13, 2025; CD and LP editions were announced for May 9, 2025. The soundtrack was compiled by music journalist Jeff Mao and producer Joseph Patel, and co-produced by Mao, Patel, Questlove and Rob Santos on behalf of Sony Music. Check the label’s soundtrack announcement for format information and current product details; inventory and prices may change. The soundtrack is an audio release, not a home-video edition of the documentary.

Why the film may interest both fans and newcomers
Producer Joseph Patel told Disney the team wanted the film to work for viewers who knew the music, people unfamiliar with the band and its story, and dedicated fans. He also described an approach that weaves music, voices and archival footage together rhythmically. That combination makes the documentary a point of entry into the band’s history as well as a broader portrait of the pressures attached to its success.
For production credits, Hulu’s official press materials list MRC, Network Entertainment, Two One Five Entertainment, RadicalMedia, Stardust Films and ID8 Multimedia as production entities, in association with Sony Music Entertainment. Joseph Patel and Derik Murray are credited as producers, with Questlove as director.
