TUAW Relaunch: AI-Like Articles Appeared Under Former Writers’ Names

TUAW shut down in 2015, then returned in July 2024 with new articles attributed to former writers. Christina Warren and Mike Schramm denied writing the posts; reporting later described changed bylines and removed older articles.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), which shut down in 2015, returned online in July 2024 with articles attributed to former writers who said they had not written them. Contemporary reporting described the new material as apparently AI-generated or rewritten from archived posts, and reported that author-page changes and the removal of older posts followed the controversy. The evidence establishes what journalists observed and what the writers said—not the precise process used to produce each article or any legal finding.

What happened when TUAW returned?

TUAW stopped operating in 2015, according to Engadget’s account. Nearly a decade later, the site began publishing again in July 2024. Reports by 404 Media and Engadget described new posts carrying names and profiles associated with people who had worked for the old blog.

404 Media reported that some accompanying images appeared AI-generated and that the articles appeared to be AI-generated or rewritten from archived material. These are the outlet’s observations; the reporting does not establish the technical process behind every post. Nor does an article bearing a familiar byline establish that the named person wrote or approved it.

Who was named, and what did the former writers say?

Christina Warren

Former TUAW writer Christina Warren told 404 Media she had not written the new articles attributed to her and objected to the association of her name and image with them. Futurism quoted her saying: “I have definitely not written those articles, and that is definitely not my picture.” (Futurism)

Engadget also reported a concrete mismatch: material attributed to Warren included pieces dated before she began writing for TUAW. That discrepancy is a reason to question the attribution independently of speculation about how the posts were made.

Mike Schramm

Former TUAW writer Mike Schramm likewise told 404 Media he had not written the articles attributed to him and said the accompanying picture was not his. The outlet quoted him saying, “I have definitely not written those articles,” and, of the image, “that is definitely not my picture.”

Who bought TUAW?

Engadget identified Web Orange Limited as the buyer of the domain, citing TUAW’s own About page. The site described the acquisition as being “without its original content.” That is the site’s account of the acquisition, not independent verification of the transaction’s terms. The sources reviewed do not establish what arrangements, if any, were made concerning former writers’ names, biographies, images, or archived material.

What changed after the complaints?

Engadget reported that TUAW changed author-page labels after reporters asked questions, including changing Christina Warren’s name to “Mary Brown.” The outlet said the company had not responded to its questions by publication. Later, TidBITS reported that posts from before July 2024 had been removed and described additional byline changes after complaints and public attention. These reports document changes at that time; they do not establish what the site displays today.

What is established—and what is not?

  • Established by contemporary reporting: TUAW had ceased operating in 2015 and returned in July 2024; new posts appeared under former writers’ names and profiles; and named former writers denied authorship.
  • Reported, not technically verified post by post: the new articles appeared AI-generated or rewritten from archived posts, and some images appeared AI-generated.
  • Not independently confirmed in the sources reviewed: the exact content-generation process, the acquisition’s full terms, and any authorization arrangements involving the former writers or their work.
  • No legal resolution established: the reporting reviewed does not document a court or regulator finding that the conduct was unlawful. Concerns about possible legal violations should not be presented as adjudicated facts.

OECD.AI also published an incident summary, but it is a monitor’s account rather than an official determination by the OECD: OECD.AI incident entry.

Why the byline distinction matters

An archive of old writing and a new article carrying an old writer’s name are different things. A preserved original lets readers consult work published at the time; a rewritten or newly generated post presented under a former writer’s identity can mislead readers about authorship and endorsement. In this case, the former writers’ denials and the reported date mismatch are central evidence when assessing the attribution. They do not, by themselves, resolve questions about ownership, permissions, or legal liability.
