These six takeaways trace the record from its familiar chemistry and polished production to the songs and critical disagreements that gave it a life beyond its track list.
1. It turns a long-running partnership into a full album
Released March 22, 2024, WE DON’T TRUST YOU is Future and Metro Boomin’s first full-length project together, according to Apple Music. The pairing was not new: Apple points to earlier collaborations including “Karate Chop,” “Honest” and “Mask Off,” describing the latter as their last collaboration before this album. That is Apple’s account of the pairing, rather than a claim about every point in either artist’s discography.
The distinction matters. The album’s premise is not two artists meeting for the first time; it is a tested artist-producer relationship operating at album scale. The title track, which opens the sequence, establishes the project’s guarded, confrontational mood before the early run of “Type Shit” and “Like That” announces how much of the album’s attention will turn toward its guests and high-impact moments.
2. Metro’s polished production gives the trap framework a cinematic edge
Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre describes the production as smooth and spotless, pointing to showy beat switches and orchestral touches. That is one critic’s reading, not a universal verdict, but it helps explain the album’s particular sheen: its trap foundation is often arranged for scale and dramatic contrast rather than rawness alone.

Two tracks make the contrast especially clear
- “Young Metro”: Pierre hears the track building toward a synth explosion, making its gradual escalation part of the appeal.
- “Ice Attack”: In Pierre’s description, it moves from a slow, moody opening into an uptempo, flashy passage, showcasing the album’s taste for sudden changes in energy.
The result is an album that can feel sleek and cinematic even when its subject matter is suspicious or menacing. Listeners who want rougher, less polished trap may find that finish less compelling; listeners drawn to big transitions and carefully shaped atmosphere may hear it as the record’s central strength.
3. Future moves between familiar modes without abandoning his persona
Future’s performance shifts across moods, but the album remains recognizably his. Apple Music frames “Runnin Outta Time” through heartbreak and “Fried (She a Vibe)” through hedonism. Pierre, meanwhile, hears Future sounding energized while still bringing a sinister atmosphere to the project.

Those modes coexist rather than resolving into a single character arc. The album can move from emotional weariness to indulgence and menace, using Future’s established vocal persona as the connective tissue. Pierre argues that it is less interested in the character work found on some earlier Future projects; that criticism points to a real distinction between range of mood and depth of narrative development. A listener can enjoy the shifts in sound and attitude without finding the album as interested in building a story around them.
4. The guests offer different ways into the album
The features are not confined to one kind of cameo. Sony Music Taiwan’s track list credits the guests below; Apple Music also singles out Kendrick Lamar’s verse and describes the sound of “Everyday Hustle.”

| Track | Featured artist(s) | What the feature brings into focus |
|---|---|---|
| “Young Metro” | The Weeknd | A guest appearance on a track Pierre describes as building toward a synth-heavy climax. |
| “Type Shit” | Travis Scott and Playboi Carti | A three-artist pairing near the beginning of the album. |
| “Like That” | Kendrick Lamar | A fiery verse that became the album’s most discussed moment. |
| “Cinderella” | Travis Scott | A separate Travis Scott appearance later in the track list. |
| “Everyday Hustle” | Rick Ross | A soul sample and Ross’s appearance give the song a distinct texture, as Apple Music notes. |
The spread gives listeners several entry points: a particular guest, a production shift, or a song’s atmosphere. It also means the album’s identity is not carried by Future and Metro alone; some of its most memorable contrasts come from how different collaborators alter the feel of individual tracks.
5. “Like That” became the album’s cultural flashpoint
“Like That” was an early-album track that quickly overshadowed much of the conversation around the project. The Associated Press’s 2024 year-end song selection highlighted Kendrick Lamar’s fiery verse, the rapid sample of Rodney O and Joe Cooley’s “Everlasting Bass” and Eazy-E’s “Eazy-Duz-It,” and the track’s ferocity. Those ingredients make the song feel like more than a routine feature: its vocal and sample choices turn it into a pointed, high-energy centerpiece.

Pitchfork interprets Lamar’s verse as jabs at Drake and J. Cole and connects the album’s event-like premise to that conflict. That is a critical interpretation of the song and album, not evidence of the artists’ private motives. What is clear from the track itself and the reception described by AP is that Lamar’s verse became the moment listeners most readily associated with the record.

Pierre hears the album drawing on nostalgia for earlier Atlanta trap, while also praising deep cuts such as “Fried (She a Vibe)” and “Ain’t No Love.” His reservation is that the project can evoke earlier memories instead of making new ones. The two judgments fit together: familiar chemistry, atmosphere and references can be enjoyable, but familiarity can also make the album feel less forward-moving to a critic looking for a fresh statement.

That tension is captured in Pierre’s review, published March 27, 2024: “Two of rap’s biggest hitmakers team up for a sleek, vengeful project that somewhat successfully tries to recapture the feeling of an event album.” The phrase “somewhat successfully” is the hinge. The record delivers polish, star power and a standout flashpoint, while leaving room to debate whether its nostalgia and carefully finished sound amount to a new artistic high-water mark.
