As he tries to get his allies out of Osaka, Blackthorne’s actions during a dangerous escape become evidence Toranaga can use—without turning their uneasy alliance into simple trust.
What happens in “Tomorrow Is Tomorrow”
FX’s episode guide frames the central problem plainly: after Blackthorne survives an assassination attempt, Toranaga must ferry his allies out of Osaka. The route out is not just a practical escape. It puts Toranaga’s judgment of people, and Blackthorne’s usefulness to him, under pressure.

The episode’s political premise is captured in FX’s guide: “In war and in peace, a good enemy can be more valuable than a good ally.” That idea helps explain why Toranaga can make room for Blackthorne while still treating him as a person to assess rather than a friend to trust.
Why Toranaga keeps his intentions guarded
Mariko gives the clearest explanation of Toranaga’s reputation in FX’s official episode-three companion podcast transcript: “My lord is famous for his trickery.” She connects his guardedness to childhood spent as a hostage, when he learned that enemies could be everywhere and friends nowhere. In that world, showing what he truly feels is dangerous; as Mariko puts it, “To show your true heart is to risk your life.”
#1 Best Overall
- Rival 16th-century ninja clans battle for possession of a gold cache.
The episode lets that history inform Toranaga’s behavior without spelling out every calculation. He does not need to explain his full design for the audience to see that he is watching how others respond to risk. His silence functions as control: other people must act without knowing exactly how he will interpret their choices.
Blackthorne’s escape becomes a test
Showrunner and executive producer Justin Marks says Toranaga values loyalty above all, but he is not naive about Blackthorne’s motives. Blackthorne has practical reasons to align with Toranaga, who opposes his enemies. Marks describes Toranaga as recognizing a quality in Blackthorne’s defiance of what appears to be certain death: a willingness to make his own fate rather than submit to it.

- Shogun (Complete Series)
That makes the escape a test rather than a sentimental turning point. Toranaga can recognize Blackthorne’s potential while understanding that the alliance is partly transactional. Marks says the episode establishes where the two characters are headed, but the bond remains complicated rather than settled.
What Hatamoto means for Blackthorne
After the escape, Blackthorne is named Hatamoto, as the official companion podcast explains. The title marks closeness to a lord and the privilege of direct audience. In the episode’s terms, it is recognition: Blackthorne has shown he may be useful and brave enough to bring nearer. It is not proof that Toranaga has surrendered strategic control or that their interests have become identical.
Actor Nestor Carbonell calls Toranaga “the ultimate puppet master.” The phrase fits the tension of this promotion: Toranaga can grant Blackthorne access while continuing to observe what he does with it.

The companion podcast’s production commentary shows how the action gives visual form to the political uncertainty. Marks describes the boat race as difficult to shoot and a defining moment for Blackthorne. Production designer Helen Jarvis discusses the contrast between the dark, pitch-coated Black Ship and Toranaga’s lighter galley, along with the work of creating the ships and Osaka setting. The vessels make competing power and escape routes legible on screen without requiring Toranaga to explain his thinking.
Rank #4
- Shrink-wrapped
Stunt coordinator Lauro Chartrand-Delvalle describes the ambush as a sequence built from interlocking actions: dialogue, cover, attacks, a message runner and flaming arrows. That crowded choreography makes the escape feel like a political crisis in motion. Toranaga’s allies are not simply fleeing; each action reveals who can keep functioning when plans are threatened and loyalties are difficult to read.
