The cast of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit reunited on The View on June 5, 2024, to mark the film’s 30th anniversary. Whoopi Goldberg returned as Deloris Van Cartier, and former cast members revisited two of the movie’s best-known musical moments: “Oh Happy Day” and “Joyful, Joyful.”
When and where the reunion happened
The anniversary celebration aired on The View on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. It brought together performers from the 1993 film for studio conversation and musical performances. TVLine’s recap describes the discussion and the cast’s return to the film’s music.
“Oh Happy Day”: Ryan Toby leads the performance
Ryan Toby, who played Ahmal in the film, led the reunion performance of “Oh Happy Day.” The View/TplusR’s clip description identifies it as a performance from the 1993 movie that opened the anniversary special. BET also reported that the cast revisited the song during the reunion.
“Joyful, Joyful” brings the former young cast back together
The group also performed “Joyful, Joyful,” the film’s climactic choir number. TVLine reported that former young cast members joined the performance, including Tanya Blount, Ryan Toby, Monica Calhoun, David Kater, Frank Odell Howard, Dionna Nishelle, Jermaine Montell, Deondray Gossfield, Ashley Thompson, Deedee Magno Hall and Alex Martin. That is a reported list of participants, not necessarily a complete roll call.
#1 Best Overall
Lauryn Hill, who played Rita Watson and sang the solo in the original film, was not at the reunion. BET reported that Tanya Trotter took the “Joyful, Joyful” solo in her place; the available reports do not give a reason for Hill’s absence. BET’s reunion report covers the performance and cast update.
