Sherri Papini pleaded guilty in 2022 to mail fraud and making false statements after investigators determined she had voluntarily stayed with a former boyfriend and injured herself to support a false kidnapping story. ABC’s 2025 20/20 episode, Sherri Papini: Where the Truth Lies, revisits the case and features her ex-husband, Keith Papini. It is distinct from the Hulu docuseries, the Discovery ID documentary and a dramatized film about the case.
What happened in the Sherri Papini kidnapping case?
On November 2, 2016, Sherri Papini did not return from a jog in Redding, California. Her then-husband, Keith, reported her missing, prompting a search. She reappeared 22 days later, on November 24, and said two women had abducted and abused her.
Investigators later established a different account. The U.S. Department of Justice says DNA, cellphone and rental-car evidence showed Papini had voluntarily stayed with a former boyfriend and harmed herself to support her story. She continued making false statements after investigators presented evidence in 2020. The DOJ described the kidnapping as fabricated and said the investigation had diverted time and resources from other public-safety work. DOJ case and sentencing account.
The guilty pleas and sentence
In 2022, Papini pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of making false statements. On September 19, 2022, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California announced an 18-month prison sentence, 36 months of supervised release and $309,902 in restitution. The restitution reflected losses and costs associated with the case; it is not a separate finding about the later claims aired in documentaries.

In later documentary coverage, Papini accused her former boyfriend, James Reyes, of abducting her. That is a changed account and should be distinguished from her guilty pleas and the DOJ’s account of the evidence. Reyes denied her allegation. For viewers, the useful distinction is between a later allegation presented in documentary coverage and the legal resolution: Papini admitted guilt to mail fraud and making false statements, and the DOJ described the evidence that disproved the original kidnapping story. Neither Keith’s recollections nor the later allegation replaces that record.
