Shelley Duvall later spoke critically about her 2016 appearance on Dr. Phil, but the words quoted in the available coverage do not show her explicitly saying, “I regret it.” In 2021, she said she learned what kind of person Phil McGraw was “the hard way.” McGraw, speaking in 2023, said he did not regret what he did.

What Duvall said about the interview

Duvall discussed the appearance in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Fox News and The Independent quoted her saying: “I found out the kind of person he is the hard way. My mother didn’t like him, either. A lot of people, like Dan, said, ‘You shouldn’t have done that, Shelley.’”

Those remarks convey criticism and recount warnings from people around her. They are not a direct quotation of Duvall saying she regretted appearing. The distinction matters: the reporting supports saying she spoke negatively about the experience, not that she explicitly used the word “regret.”

Why the 2016 appearance drew criticism

Duvall appeared on Dr. Phil in November 2016. Promotional clips and contemporary coverage showed her discussing distressing beliefs, including that her former Popeye co-star Robin Williams was alive and “shape-shifting,” and that a man she called the Sheriff of Nottingham threatened her. ABC News quoted Duvall in an episode clip saying, “I’m very sick. I need help.” These were statements presented in the episode and in reporting at the time; they should not be treated as independently verified events or as a diagnosis.

The presentation prompted public objections. Vivian Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick’s daughter, criticized the episode in a public letter, calling it “a form of lurid and exploitative entertainment” and “appallingly cruel.” The Los Angeles Times reported on November 17, 2016, that the circumstances of the interview were unknown. The coverage cited here therefore does not establish the full consent process or production context.

What McGraw said about it

In 2023, speaking to CNN’s Chris Wallace, McGraw said: “Oh I don’t regret what I did.” The Independent also reported that McGraw said the special had been “promoted in a way that people thought was unbecoming.” He described the show as having worked with Duvall’s family and offered inpatient and outpatient care. Those are McGraw’s account of the show’s actions, not independent treatment records.

Fox News separately reported Duvall’s account that McGraw repeatedly called her mother after the episode. The outlet also quoted a Dr. Phil spokesperson describing offers of inpatient treatment and later follow-up. These details should be attributed to Duvall’s account and the spokesperson, rather than presented as independently documented care.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Duvall’s position: Her 2021 comments were critical and included her recollection that people had warned her against appearing.
  • McGraw’s position: He explicitly said in 2023 that he did not regret what he did, while acknowledging criticism of how the special was promoted.
  • What remains unsettled in the cited coverage: The full production circumstances, consent process, and independent documentation of post-show care.
