In interviews over the years, she has described motherhood as the experience that reshaped her priorities: first by making time at home and protecting her sons’ childhood central, and later by bringing the harder conversations and phone-related friction of parenting teenagers.
When Crow became a mother, her priorities changed
Crow adopted Wyatt in 2007 and Levi in 2010, according to ABC News’s 2017 report. Reflecting on adoption in an interview with People, she said, “Adopting my boys — that’s just been the biggest everlasting event that has informed everything.” She added, “When you have kids, your priorities definitely change. I really felt consistency is the most important thing.” (ABC News, April 13, 2017)
That change affected how she thought about work and travel. In the same report, Crow said she did not want to spend more nights away from home and emphasized the value of being consistently present. The Los Angeles Times’s 2017 profile likewise described her balancing work with single motherhood and quoted her saying that time away from her children was time she could not get back. She wanted to protect her sons’ childhood
In 2017, Crow described limiting television or iPad use to 30 minutes and said she was protective of her sons’ childhood innocence: “I’m very protective of them being allowed to have the innocence of being children.” ABC News also reported that she was reluctant to share photos of them publicly. These were Crow’s choices as she described them at the time, not a general prescription for other families. (ABC News, April 13, 2017)

The Los Angeles Times offered a glimpse of the less solemn side of the balance: Crow recalled her sons objecting to her wearing a Mickey Mouse T-shirt onstage. She said she could take pride in being the “dorky mom” they thought she was. (Los Angeles Times, April 2017)
Her mother helped her rethink what a family could look like
In a 2021 TODAY interview excerpt republished by CNA, Crow said her mother encouraged her to question the idea that she had to follow the same family path as her parents. “The story I was telling myself limited what I thought I could have,” Crow said. Her conclusion was simple: “Families look like all different things.”

Crow also described the gratitude she feels toward her sons, saying, “I tell my kids all the time, ‘I am so honoured to be your mum.’” The remarks were published by CNA on October 27, 2021, and updated December 16, 2025. (CNA Lifestyle)
By 2024, the conversations included teenage independence
In a March 2024 AARP interview, Crow spoke about raising teenagers and the serious subjects that could come up at home. She recalled Wyatt asking at age 8, “Would there be enough air for us to breathe if the forests went away?” Crow said, “We have hard conversations, and they know in our house there is nothing they cannot talk about.” AARP reported that Wyatt was 16 and Levi was 13 at the time of that interview; those are ages reported in March 2024, not current ages. Crow also described new tensions as her sons sought more freedom and phone access. “It’s not fun being in competition with a cellphone,” she said. The comment marked a different stage from her earlier efforts to limit screens: the focus was now on negotiating autonomy as they grew older, rather than on a specific rule for young children. In the 2024 AARP interview, Crow said, “The greatest thing in my life has been raising those two boys. There is nothing I would not do or trade for their happiness.” In another 2024 interview, with Esquire, she said that by the time her children came into her life, she no longer felt compelled to accomplish particular things, which made decisions easier. She also spoke about valuing her relationship with her sons and not having imagined someone entering and changing that dynamic. (AARP, March 26, 2024; Esquire, 2024)
