Sherri Papini’s 2025 Interview Revisits the Kidnapping Hoax—But Not the Court Record

Sherri Papini’s 2025 interview coverage presents a different version of her story after she pleaded guilty to mail fraud and making false statements. It does not change what she admitted in federal court: her plea agreement says she knowingly planned and took part in the hoax kidnapping. ABC’s 20/20 episode, “Sherri Papini: Where the Truth Lies,” aired May 24, 2025, and previewed a separate Investigation Discovery documentary.

What did Sherri Papini say in the 2025 interview coverage?

ABC described Papini as sharing “a different version of her story” after her guilty plea. Its May 21, 2025 announcement said the 20/20 broadcast would include an exclusive preview of an Investigation Discovery documentary featuring her interview about the events leading to the hoax, her time in prison, and her life afterward. The official episode listing identifies the broadcast as Season 47, Episode 28, dated May 24, 2025, with a runtime of 1 hour 21 minutes.

The available official descriptions establish that the later coverage offered a changed account, but they do not provide a full interview transcript. It is therefore more accurate to describe the interview at that level than to attribute unverified quotations or detailed explanations to Papini.

What did Papini admit in court?

The federal case rests on Papini’s guilty plea and the filed plea agreement, not on how a later documentary frames her story. She pleaded guilty on April 18, 2022, to one count of mail fraud and one count of making false statements. The factual basis in the agreement states: “Defendant Sherri PAPINI knowingly planned and participated in her own hoax kidnapping and then made materially false statements to FBI agents about the circumstances of her disappearance and committed mail fraud based on her hoax kidnapping.”

The Department of Justice sentencing announcement says Papini was reported missing on November 2, 2016, and reappeared on November 24, a period of 22 days. She had claimed that two Hispanic women abducted and abused her. According to the DOJ, DNA, cellphone, and car-rental evidence showed she had voluntarily stayed with a former boyfriend and harmed herself to support her false statements.

Those points are part of the federal account and court record. A later interview may add Papini’s perspective, but it does not amend her plea or reverse the judicial findings and admissions.

What sentence did she receive?

On September 19, 2022, Papini was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $309,902 in restitution, according to the DOJ. These are the terms of her federal sentence.

How does the new documentary relate to Perfect Wife?

The Investigation Discovery documentary previewed by 20/20 is distinct from Hulu’s earlier limited series, Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini. Hulu describes Perfect Wife as a documentary series with access to Papini’s family and friends and to investigators who worked for six years to solve the disappearance. The later production centers on a post-plea interview with Papini, as described by ABC.

That difference matters when weighing what each production can show. An interview is Papini’s later account; family, friend, or investigator interviews offer other perspectives. Neither documentary format should be treated as equivalent to the filed plea agreement and sentencing record when establishing what she admitted or what the federal case concluded.

Where can viewers find the two productions?

ABC’s official listing for “Sherri Papini: Where the Truth Lies” provides the episode details. Hulu’s official Perfect Wife page describes the earlier series. The cited pages establish the programs and their descriptions; they do not establish current streaming availability in every region.
