Sheryl Crow has said that becoming a mother through adoption changed what mattered most to her: she wanted to spend fewer nights away from home and give her sons a consistent presence. Her mother also helped her question the assumption that she had to marry before becoming a parent.
What Crow has said about choosing adoption
Crow adopted her sons, Wyatt and Levi. ABC News reported in April 2017 that Wyatt joined the family in 2007 and Levi in 2010. In that report, Crow described adoption as a defining experience: “Adopting my boys — that’s just been the biggest everlasting event that has informed everything.” ABC News reported the remarks from an interview with People.
In a 2010 profile, The Guardian noted that Crow chose not to wait for the right prospective father before pursuing adoption; Levi joined the family two years after Wyatt. That profile supplies earlier context, while Crow’s later comments explain more directly what the decision meant to her. The Guardian
How motherhood shifted her priorities
Crow connected becoming a parent with wanting to be home more. In the remarks ABC News attributed to her, she said, “I didn’t want to spend any more nights away from home.” She also emphasized routine and stability: “I really felt consistency is the most important thing.”

In a 2021 account of her appearance on Making Space with Hoda Kotb, Crow said she felt ready to spend time at home and did not feel she was missing out on something else. She described feeling honored to be her sons’ mother. CNA’s account of the interview
The encouragement that changed the story she told herself
Crow said her mother urged her to question the idea that she had to marry before becoming a parent. Recalling how that shifted her thinking, Crow said: “The story I was telling myself limited what I thought I could have, until somebody stepped in and said, ‘Wait a minute, your story doesn’t have to look like your mum and dad’s story’. Families look like all different things.” The account of her Making Space interview presents her mother’s encouragement as a turning point: Crow could imagine building a family without following her parents’ path.

How Crow later summed up the experience
In a 2022 interview, Crow offered a brief retrospective: “I started the adoption process, and before I knew it, I had two beautiful boys.” AARP That summary sits alongside her fuller reflections on family, being at home, and the importance of consistency.
These are Crow’s reported personal reasons for adopting; they are not a general account of adoption or advice for prospective parents. The cited reports do not provide a full transcript of the podcast or a comprehensive account of either adoption process.
