Sean Bean, Paul Heaton and several other public figures have been linked with Sheffield United, but there is no reliable published ranking of the club’s most famous supporters—and the available evidence does not establish seven names equally well. The list below is a selective guide, not an official top seven; Michael Palin’s connection is mixed, and a seventh entry cannot be responsibly confirmed from the sources cited here.
How to read this shortlist
“Most famous” has no defined measure here: the available club history and fan roundup name public figures, but neither supplies a fame ranking. The entries are therefore grouped by how clearly the cited material supports their Sheffield United connection, not ranked by a score. A first-person account carries more weight than a name appearing in a roundup.
The clearest documented connections
Sean Bean
The actor is identified as a real-life Sheffield United supporter in the club’s club-history page. The connection also appears in the 1996 film When Saturday Comes, which stars Bean as a player scouted by Sheffield United. A fan roundup adds that he followed the club from childhood and served as a director for five years in the 2000s, though those details are secondary-source claims. [c002]
The film is the most direct documentary and physical-media connection on this list: anyone looking for a When Saturday Comes DVD should check current stock and format, as availability was not established here.

- Regular fit
- 100% polyester (recycled)
- HEAT.RDY
Paul Heaton
The musician gave a first-person account of choosing United despite his family’s Sheffield Wednesday ties. In a 2005 FourFourTwo interview, he recalled: “My two brothers are Sheffield Wednesday fans and my dad took us there but I always wanted to watch United,” he remembers. He also said he attended matches home and away after becoming a musician. [c003]
Public figures named in a fan roundup
The following people are identified as Sheffield United supporters in a secondary roundup. The cited material is useful for identifying candidates, but it is not equally strong evidence for each person’s history with the club.
Rank #2
- Slim fit Crewneck 100% polyester (recycled) AEROREADY Manchester United woven crest
Joe Elliott
The Def Leppard singer is described as Sheffield-born and a lifelong Blades supporter. The roundup also says he contributed to songs for When Saturday Comes; treat that detail as a secondary-source report rather than independently established here. [c002]
Joe Root
The cricketer is reported to support United and to have attended the 2022 play-off semi-final. This is a cross-sport connection, but the cited account is secondary. [c002]

Jessica Ennis-Hill
The Sheffield-born Olympic champion is identified as a United supporter. The roundup says she asked in 2014 for her name to be removed from a Bramall Lane stand amid the Ched Evans controversy. That episode is a historical, qualified account; it should not be taken as evidence of her current relationship with the club. [c002]
A mixed association: Michael Palin
The entertainer appears in both a club-history list and a fan roundup, but the roundup also notes his Sheffield Wednesday allegiance. It is more accurate to describe Palin’s association as mixed or shared than to present him as an unequivocal United loyalist. [c001] [c002]
Rank #4
- Official 25/26 home jersey for youth sizing
- Lightweight, breathable fabric for optimal comfort
- Heat-applied club crest on the front
- Ribbed crewneck and sleeve cuffs
- Moisture-wicking technology helps keep you dry
Why this is not a definitive top seven
The club-history page lists other names, including Kell Brook, Richard Caborn, Flea, Matt Fitzpatrick, Paul Goodison and Mark Labbett. The cited material does not establish which would be the strongest seventh choice through person-specific primary reporting, so adding one as a confirmed entry would overstate the evidence. [c001]
Sheffield United’s official podcast listing describes One Of Our Own as a programme of exclusive interviews with major names in the club’s history. It may offer useful context on club figures, but it does not establish a celebrity-supporter ranking. [c004]
