Mark’s innie helps Gemma escape, then chooses to stay with Helly. That decision gives him a future of his own—and leaves the rescue, the relationships, and Lumon’s larger project unresolved.
What happens in “Cold Harbor”
“Cold Harbor” is the season 2 finale, listed by Apple TV with a runtime of 1 hour 15 minutes and a release date of March 21, 2025. Apple TV’s episode page is the official viewing listing; availability and subscription terms may vary by territory.
The rescue plan depends on a fragile partnership between Mark’s outie, who knows Gemma as his wife, and his innie, who has access to Lumon’s severed floor. Gemma’s innie is Ms. Casey, but the person Mark is trying to save is more than a route out of the building: she is his outie’s wife and a person held within Lumon’s system. Innie Mark, meanwhile, has his own bond with Helly and reasons to question whether his outie sees him as a person or merely as a tool.
During Lumon’s celebration, Mark completes the Cold Harbor file and uses the distraction to reach Gemma. He helps her get to the exit. At the decisive moment, however, he does not leave with her. He turns back and stays inside with Helly. Gemma has a way out; the two Marks’ relationship and the question of what each life is owed remain unsettled.

What Mark’s choice means for Gemma, Helly, and his innie
Gemma gets a chance to leave, not a reunion
The rescue answers the immediate question of whether Mark can reach Gemma, but it does not deliver a conventional reunion. The finale puts her escape in motion while separating that outcome from what Mark’s innie wants. Her path out matters, but the episode does not show the full consequences of her escape or resolve what her relationship with outie Mark can become.
Innie Mark claims his own attachments
Mark’s decision to stay with Helly makes the season’s split-identity premise an ethical conflict, not just a puzzle. Outie Mark needs his innie’s cooperation to save Gemma, but the innie has a life and relationships that cannot be treated as disposable once they have served that goal. The Ringer’s finale recap likewise reads the innies’ growing reliance on one another as central to the story.

Creator Dan Erickson told TV Insider that the conversation between the two Marks makes the innie more alert to the possibility that his outie is selling him something: “There are a couple of moments throughout [the conversation] where [innie Mark] starts to get the sense that he’s being sold something by this guy and he might not be able to trust what he says.” The outie getting Helly’s name wrong sharpens that distrust. It is a small failure of recognition with outsized force: Mark’s innie hears that his own life is not fully visible to the person asking him to risk it.
That choice is emotionally legible without being a simple declaration that one Mark is right and the other is wrong. The finale asks viewers to take the innie’s attachments seriously while leaving the cost of his decision—and what it means for Gemma—open.

How the Cold Harbor file connects plot and theme
The title file gives Lumon’s work a human cost. Mark’s completion of Cold Harbor is tied directly to reaching Gemma, turning a task on the severed floor into part of the rescue. The episode makes the company’s abstract work feel bound up with the people trapped inside its system.
It does not, however, explain every element of Lumon’s project. The finale’s payoff is strongest as a link between the file, Gemma’s confinement, and the choices forced on the innies—not as a complete account of what Lumon intends or how its operation works. The show’s premise, as Apple describes it, is a surgical division between employees’ work and personal memories; “Cold Harbor” presses on the harder implication that separating memory does not make either self’s experience inconsequential.

Does the finale bring the season together?
Yes, on character and theme; only partly on plot. The central emotional question is no longer simply whether the outie can use the innie to get to Gemma. Mark’s innie makes an independent choice, and the season’s concern with agency becomes the engine of the climax. The rescue plot and the identity conflict converge in one decision rather than being resolved in separate tracks.
The episode’s extended closing movement, its red-lit visuals, and its music cue give that decision room to land. Time’s March 2025 critics’ roundtable highlighted the deliberate final stretch and its visual choices. The spectacle supports the emotional stakes, though the season’s balance is not beyond criticism: Time’s Eliana Dockterman praised the pacing while questioning whether the season did enough to deepen its secondary characters.

That tension keeps the finale from feeling like a tidy capstone. It resolves the immediate rescue attempt, but carries the larger consequences forward. The cliffhanger works because it follows a clear choice, not because it promises that every mystery will eventually receive a neat answer.
How critics responded
Reception was strongly positive in the sources available, but not uniform in emphasis. Judy Berman said of the finale in Time’s roundtable, “I loved the finale,” praising its closing stretch. Dockterman’s reservation about secondary-character development offers a meaningful counterpoint to the praise of its pacing and visual craft.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from 15 reviews when accessed in 2026; that score and count are a dated, changeable snapshot, not a permanent consensus. Its page includes Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone describing the episode as an exciting, surprising, funny, and moving reckoning with the series’ core ideas, and Vulture’s Erin Qualey rating it 5/5. The episode’s Rotten Tomatoes page may show a different total over time.
Episode details and companion discussion
