Amy Locane, known for Cry-Baby and Melrose Place, left acting years before a 2010 New Jersey crash killed Helene Seeman and seriously injured her husband, Fred. Locane was convicted of vehicular homicide and assault by automobile. After years of appeals and resentencing, she received an eight-year term in 2020. In an April 2025 interview, she said she had been released in December 2024 and was trying to rebuild her life.
Who is Amy Locane?
Locane is an American actor whose credits include the 1990 film Cry-Baby, the television series Melrose Place, and the films Airheads and Blue Sky. “It Girl” is a framing used in the title, not a formal industry designation established by the sources cited here.
In a profile published April 9, 2025, Us Weekly said Locane left show business in 2006. She told the magazine she would return to acting “in a heartbeat” and found the idea of a Melrose Place reboot exciting. Those comments express her interest; they do not confirm a reboot role or a return to the industry.
What happened in the 2010 crash?
On June 27, 2010, Locane’s car struck a vehicle turning into a driveway in Montgomery Township, New Jersey, near Princeton. Helene Seeman died, and her husband, Fred Seeman, was seriously injured.

CBS News, reporting with the Associated Press, said witnesses reported that Locane had consumed several drinks before driving home. A state expert testified that her blood-alcohol level was likely about three times the legal limit and that she was traveling roughly 53 mph in a 35-mph zone. These figures were testimony reported by CBS/AP; the report also said the indictment did not include a drunken-driving charge.
Locane contended that a third motorist distracted her after an earlier collision at a traffic light, according to the same report. The crash’s human consequences remain central: Helene Seeman was killed, and Fred Seeman sustained serious injuries.

What was Amy Locane convicted of?
A jury convicted Locane of vehicular homicide and assault by automobile. The indictment’s not including a drunken-driving charge is distinct from the state expert’s testimony about intoxication; the two should not be conflated.
In 2019, speaking to CBS2, Locane acknowledged her conduct. CBS News New York quoted her saying: “I drove home while I was intoxicated, and the consequences were devastating.”

Why was Amy Locane resentenced several times?
The case drew years of appeals and resentencing proceedings after the initial prison term was challenged as too lenient. CBS/AP’s September 2020 account described four sentencings before three judges and numerous appeals by that point.
| Stage | Outcome reported |
|---|---|
| 2013 | The first judge imposed a three-year sentence. |
| 2019 | A resentencing resulted in a five-year sentence. |
| September 2020 | A judge imposed an eight-year sentence. CBS/AP reported that New Jersey law required Locane to serve more than six years before becoming eligible for parole. |
At the 2020 sentencing, Judge Angela Borkowski said, “If you hadn’t gotten behind the wheel of your vehicle on this night, the incident never would have happened,” as quoted by CBS/AP. The statement came in the context of sentencing after the crash and its fatal consequences.

When was Amy Locane released, and what has she said about life afterward?
In its April 9, 2025 interview, Us Weekly reported that Locane was released five days before Christmas 2024, after serving roughly six and a half years during her second incarceration. The profile said she was first incarcerated from 2013 to 2015, then returned to prison from 2020 to 2024 after the original sentence was found too lenient.
In that interview, Locane said she had been sober since 2010, lived quietly outside Princeton, attended a Presbyterian church, worked at a doctor’s office, and was close to completing an associate degree she began in prison. She also spoke about remorse and efforts to rebuild relationships with her daughters. “It feels very raw to be back into society,” she told the magazine.
