The list ranges across village life in India, Uganda, citizenship and colonial rule, Rwanda, Darfur, and the Cold War. It is a selected list, not a complete bibliography.
Seven books by Mahmood Mamdani
The titles and original dates below follow Columbia University’s profile. The subject descriptions are deliberately broad: they indicate what each title names, rather than offering a substitute for a fuller account of the book’s argument.
| Year | Book | Topic signaled by the title |
|---|---|---|
| 1972 | The Myth of Population Control: Family, Class and Caste in an Indian Village | Family, class, caste, and population control in an Indian village. |
| 1973 | From Citizen to Refugee | Citizenship and displacement. Daraja Press uses the expanded title From Citizen to Refugee: Uganda Asians Come to Britain for a later edition. |
| 1976 | Politics and Class Formation in Uganda | Politics and class formation in Uganda. |
| 1996 | Citizen and Subject: Contemporary Africa and the Legacy of Late Colonialism | Citizenship, political status, and the legacy of late colonialism in Africa. Columbia notes that the book received the Herskovitz Prize of the African Studies Association. |
| 2001 | When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism and Genocide in Rwanda | Colonialism, nativism, and genocide in Rwanda. |
| 2004 | Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War and the Roots of Terror | America, the Cold War, and the roots of terror. |
| 2009 | Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics, and the War on Terror | Darfur, politics, and the War on Terror. |
Columbia’s profile identifies Mamdani as Herbert Lehman Professor of Government. Its Middle East Institute profile says he earned a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1974, specializes in African history and politics, and was president of CODESRIA from 1998 to 2002. Those details help situate the list, but the titles alone do not establish the books’ full arguments.
Why publication dates can differ
A date attached to a book may refer to an original title or to a later edition. Columbia lists Good Muslim, Bad Muslim as 2004; Penguin Random House gives June 21, 2005 for its 320-page edition (ISBN 9780385515375). Columbia lists Saviors and Survivors as 2009, while Penguin Random House lists a 2010 edition of 416 pages (ISBN 9780385525961). These are different edition dates, not necessarily conflicting records of a single publication event. Check the edition details when looking for a particular copy.
