Shailene Woodley is set to star in and produce a Janis Joplin biopic, announced in September 2024. Musician Linda Perry described its focus as Joplin’s “last days,” but that phrase is her characterization—not a released official synopsis. No release date has been announced in the cited reporting, and a 2026 IMDbPro listing labels the project’s production status “unknown.”
What has been announced about the Janis Joplin biopic?
On September 10, 2024, ABC reported that Woodley would star in and produce the film. The project was among independent productions selected for support through California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program. That support does not establish that filming took place in California.
Woodley connected the state to Joplin’s life and the film’s intended authenticity. In her statement, she said: “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity.” That is Woodley’s stated rationale for the project’s California connection, not confirmation of its eventual filming locations. ABC’s announcement and Woodley’s statement reported both details.
What is the film about?
On September 25, 2024, Linda Perry described the project as “a raw and honest look into Janis Joplin’s last days,” in a statement reported by Entertainment Weekly and republished by Yahoo Entertainment. Perry’s words explain the “last days” framing, but they are not a formal, scene-by-scene synopsis. Perry also said, “I’ve been waiting decades for this movie to be made.” Yahoo Entertainment’s report says Perry was working with Woodley on the project.

How is Woodley preparing to portray Joplin?
In October 2025, NME reported that Woodley was working with Perry on vocals and had discussed the challenge of singing for the role. The report described preparation, not a completed performance or a finished soundtrack. NME’s October 5, 2025 report said no official release date had been announced at that time.
When will the Janis Joplin biopic be released?
No official release date appears in the cited reporting. IMDbPro’s listing, updated May 7, 2026, names the project Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can and gives its production status as “unknown.” That database field does not establish whether filming has started, finished, or otherwise advanced; it also is not an official production announcement. The available information does not confirm a completed shoot, distribution plans, a final cast beyond Woodley, or a soundtrack. IMDbPro’s project listing is the source for the title and status label.
