Donald Trump did not pardon Death Row Records co-founder Michael “Harry-O” Harris: on January 20, 2021, the White House said Trump commuted Harris’s sentence. After Harris was released, Snoop Dogg praised the action, saying, “I love what they did.”
Did Trump pardon Harry-O?
No. The archived White House announcement identifies the action as a commutation, not a pardon. A commutation reduces or ends a sentence; it does not, by itself, erase the conviction. The announcement lists Harris among 70 people whose sentences Trump commuted that day, alongside 73 people granted pardons. Those figures are totals for the entire January 20 clemency announcement, not for Harris alone.

The terminology matters because the headline phrase “pardoning Harry-O” is imprecise. The official record says Trump commuted Harris’s federal sentence, after which he was released from federal prison, according to contemporaneous CBS Los Angeles reporting.
What did Snoop Dogg say?
CBS Los Angeles reported that Snoop praised the decision after learning Harris had been released. His remarks, originally reported by the New York Post, included: “I love what they did,” and “That’s great work for the president and his team on the way out.”

Who is Harry-O Harris?
Michael “Harry-O” Harris is a co-founder of Death Row Records. A later government transcript also identifies him as a co-founder and refers to his sentence being commuted in January 2021: the 2025 transcript.
The White House’s January 20 announcement described Harris as 59 and said he had served 30 years of a 25-years-to-life sentence for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. It characterized his prison record as exemplary, noting mentoring and business instruction for other prisoners, coursework toward business and journalism degrees, and plans for employment and housing with family support after release. Those details are the administration’s account in its clemency announcement.

Harris’s legal history is more complicated than a single sentence. CBS reported that he was released from state custody in 2011 after the victim of an attempted murder recanted, then transferred to federal prison to serve a nearly 20-year sentence for a 1990 drug-trafficking conviction. The outlet said his expected release date had been 2028. These reports describe different parts of his history; they should not be collapsed into one conviction or sentence.

Contemporaneous accounts describe Snoop as part of a clemency effort, though the White House announcement does not discuss advocacy or credit him with the decision. The Daily Beast reported that Snoop contacted music producer and clemency advocate Weldon Angelos on December 26, 2020, about Harris’s case. Angelos then enlisted Alice Marie Johnson, and the three discussed how to bring the case to the outgoing president.

The Weldon Project’s announcement likewise says the organization worked with Snoop Dogg and Alice Johnson on the commutation. Angelos recounted that Snoop asked Johnson to send the White House a message thanking it for considering Harris and expressing appreciation for “giving brothers a chance to come home.” That phrase is Angelos’s account of a message intended for the White House, not a direct public statement by Snoop.
The advocacy accounts and Snoop’s reported praise after Harris’s release are related but distinct: the former describe private efforts before the commutation; the latter is his public reaction afterward. Neither establishes that Snoop alone secured the outcome.
