Yes. On February 9, 2022, Snoop Dogg announced that he had acquired the Death Row Records brand from MNRK Music Group. The deal’s price and detailed terms were not disclosed, and contemporaneous reporting said it was unclear whether the transaction included the music catalog. Death Row was Snoop’s debut label, making the purchase a return to the start of his recording career—but the brand and the rights to individual recordings are not the same thing.
Was Death Row Records Snoop Dogg’s first label?
Yes. Death Row was Snoop Dogg’s debut label and an early home for his career. In the February 9, 2022 acquisition announcement, he described himself as one of the label’s founding members and said, “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members.” The announcement framed the purchase as a homecoming as well as a business deal.

The announcement said MNRK Music Group, controlled by funds managed by Blackstone, sold the Death Row brand to Snoop. It did not publish the purchase price or spell out the transaction’s detailed terms.
What did Snoop Dogg’s Death Row deal include?
The public announcement identifies the acquired asset as the Death Row Records brand. It does not establish that Snoop acquired every Death Row recording, master, publishing right, or other asset. The Los Angeles Times reported on the day of the announcement that the deal’s terms—including whether it covered the music catalog—were not public. That distinction matters: ownership of a label’s brand does not by itself prove ownership of each recording released under it.

What was the first Death Row release under Snoop’s ownership?
B.O.D.R. was the first album released through Death Row under Snoop’s ownership. Snoop’s official album page dates its release to February 11, 2022, two days after the acquisition announcement, and lists its running time as 53 minutes and 11 seconds. The official album page calls it the first album through Death Row under his ownership.
Does Snoop own the Death Row catalog?
The public record described here does not support a simple yes-or-no answer covering every recording. The brand acquisition was announced in 2022; later announcements addressed streaming distribution and publishing separately. Those arrangements concern different rights and should not be treated as proof that the 2022 deal transferred all catalog assets.

Streaming catalog: a 2023 licensing and distribution announcement
On March 10, 2023, music company gamma announced that Death Row’s catalog, including music and videos, had returned to streaming services worldwide under a long-term licensing agreement. The announcement said gamma held exclusive worldwide marketing and distribution rights for the catalog. It named Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me, Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food, and the Above the Rim and Murder Was the Case soundtracks among the titles reintroduced. That dated announcement describes a licensing and distribution arrangement; it does not confirm what is available on every service today.
Publishing: a separate 2024 agreement
In 2024, Snoop’s official site announced deals with Reservoir Media covering Snoop’s domestic publishing catalog and future works, as well as Death Row’s publishing catalog. The announcement did not disclose financial details. Publishing rights concern compositions and are distinct from sound-recording ownership and streaming distribution.

Why individual recordings can have different rights histories
A label’s history does not mean all recordings share the same owner or distributor. In February 2023, the Associated Press reported that Dr. Dre’s The Chronic returned to streaming through its original distributor, Interscope Records. That example is another reason not to infer blanket control over every recording from Snoop’s acquisition of the Death Row brand. The AP report concerns that album’s return, not the full scope of Snoop’s deal.

| Right or development | What the public announcement establishes | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Death Row brand | Snoop Dogg acquired the brand from MNRK Music Group; price and detailed terms were not disclosed. | February 9, 2022 |
| B.O.D.R. | Snoop’s official page identifies it as the first album released through Death Row under his ownership. | February 11, 2022 |
| Death Row streaming catalog | gamma announced a long-term licensing arrangement with exclusive worldwide marketing and distribution rights. This does not establish current availability on every service. | March 10, 2023 |
| Death Row publishing catalog | Snoop’s official site announced a publishing deal with Reservoir; the announcement did not disclose financial details. | 2024 |
| All recording masters and other catalog assets | The 2022 acquisition announcement does not specify whether all were included; contemporaneous reporting said catalog ownership was unclear. | Not established by the cited announcements |
The careful answer is that Snoop acquired Death Row Records’ brand in 2022. Subsequent public announcements describe separate arrangements involving streaming distribution and publishing, but they do not turn the brand purchase into proof that he owns every Death Row recording.
