Photographs of Sly Stone trace the rise of a band whose sound and integrated, mixed-gender lineup reflected the upheavals of the late 1960s, then follow Stone through landmark performances and public appearances in the decades that followed. Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, died in 2025 at age 82, the Associated Press reported.
How to read the photographs
The images are more than a record of a performer’s changing look: taken together, they chart Sly and the Family Stone’s emergence, breakthrough and enduring place in music history. Captions matter. A photograph of Stone alone is not automatically a picture of the band, and an archive index is not a license to republish an image.
The Library of Congress’s account of Stand! describes the group’s core lineup as Stone, Rose Stewart, Freddie Stewart, Larry Graham, Greg Errico, Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini. It emphasizes the band’s Black and white, male and female membership and places the album in the civil-rights and countercultural movements of the period. Library of Congress: “Stand!”
1968–69: a band comes into view
1968: early portraits and performance
Getty Images’ archive index lists a 1968 group portrait and a Fillmore East performance captioned October 4, 1968. These offer two distinct views of the band’s emergence: one posed, one onstage. 1969: the breakthrough years
The archive also lists a Harvard Stadium performance and other images from 1969. The year is a turning point in the story: the Library of Congress says Stand! was released in May 1969, and that “Everyday People” was number one in America for four weeks that year. Its essay reports that Stand! sold two million copies. Those figures are reported by the Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board in its 2014 essay; the four-week chart run is specific to the United States. Library of Congress: “Stand!”
The album’s title track and “Everyday People” speak to a period of social and political conflict. The Library of Congress connects the music to the era’s civil-rights and countercultural movements, and describes the band’s diverse lineup as central to its significance. That context helps explain why photographs from this period show more than a rising act: they document a group whose public presence challenged expectations about who could share a stage.

1972–73: portraits, rehearsal and life on the road
1972: portraits and rehearsal
Getty’s index includes portrait material from 1972. A Smithsonian search-result description also identifies a photograph of Stone rehearsing on September 17, 1972, credited to Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images. Because the Smithsonian page was not available for direct confirmation, treat the date and rehearsal detail as provisional until verified against the museum page and item record. 1973: London and the studio
Getty’s captions include London images from July 15–16, 1973, as well as a San Francisco recording-session image dated April 3. Together, they suggest the value of alternating between performance and work-in-progress photographs: one places Stone before an audience, while the other points toward the making of music. Confirm each item’s date, location, people shown and photographer in its full record before using it. Getty Images archive index

1974: Madison Square Garden
Getty’s archive lists images connected to Stone’s Madison Square Garden concert and his June 5, 1974 wedding to Kathy Silva. The Associated Press reports that the wedding took place onstage at Madison Square Garden. Keep the personal-life caption to what the image record and reporting establish; a photograph alone cannot supply further details about the event. Getty Images archive index Associated Press obituary
1993: induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Sly and the Family Stone entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a Performer in 1993. Getty’s index includes a captioned photograph of Stone at the event. Later public appearances
Getty’s index contains captions for appearances in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2015. These later images can extend a visual biography beyond the group’s best-known era, but the index alone does not establish the exact event or date for every picture.
