What Sean Lennon said at the Oscars
At the March 10, 2024, ceremony, executive producer Sean Lennon joined director Dave Mullins and producer Brad Booker onstage after their film won Best Animated Short at the 96th Academy Awards. Lennon said Ono had turned 91 that February, noted that it was Mother’s Day in the UK, and asked the audience: “So, could everyone please say, ‘Happy Mother’s Day, Yoko!’” Contemporary reports say the audience joined in. Rolling Stone and Just Jared reported the holiday context and the onstage moment.

Why the UK date mattered
The 2024 Oscars took place on Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. The US observes Mother’s Day on a different date, so Lennon’s greeting was specifically a UK holiday tribute—not a reference to the US observance. He linked the timing to Ono’s recent 91st birthday. How the award-winning short connects to John and Yoko
WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko is an 11-minute animated story set in an alternate World War I. Two soldiers on opposing sides play chess through a carrier pigeon, without knowing each other’s identity. The film draws inspiration from “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” the anti-war song written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. What Lennon said the moment meant to him
In a CBS News interview published December 21, 2025, Lennon described the Oscar moment as emotional and said he wanted the song to be heard in a new context. In the same interview, he recalled asking the audience to deliver the Mother’s Day greeting. The quote above follows CBS’s transcription; it has not been independently checked here against ceremony footage. CBS News also reported at that time that the short was available on YouTube; that dated report does not establish its current availability or where it can be watched today.

Backstage, producer Brad Booker told Rolling Stone, “We never know what Sean’s gonna do,” describing Lennon as charming and saying he came up with the right thing to say. Booker’s comment is a reported backstage remark, separate from Lennon’s words during the acceptance speech. Rolling Stone reported the exchange.
