What the jury decided
On July 2, 2025, the jury returned a mixed verdict: it acquitted Combs of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, and found him guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The acquittals mean he was not convicted of those two charges in this case. The two prostitution-related convictions each carried a maximum sentence of ten years, according to the Associated Press; that maximum is not the sentence the judge ultimately imposed. Why was Combs denied bail?
The July 2 denial
After the verdict, Judge Subramanian denied Combs release while he awaited sentencing. This was a post-verdict detention decision, not a finding that the jury had convicted him of racketeering or sex trafficking. The jury had acquitted him of those counts.
The renewed request in August
Combs later sought release on a $50 million bond. In August 2025, Subramanian denied that renewed request, citing evidence concerning violence, coercion or subjugation connected with the prostitution conduct. Reuters, in a report republished by Investing.com, quoted the judge as saying the argument for release “might have traction in a case that didn’t involve evidence of violence, coercion or subjugation in connection with the acts of prostitution at issue, but the record here contains evidence of all three.” The judge also said the bail ruling did not foreshadow the sentence. What happened after the bail rulings?
October 2025: challenge to the convictions
In October 2025, Subramanian rejected Combs’s request to overturn the prostitution-related convictions. Reuters reported that the judge wrote, “The government proved its case many times over.” Reuters report on the October ruling.
April 2026: appeal argument
On April 9, 2026, a three-judge panel of the Second Circuit heard arguments on Combs’s challenge to his conviction and sentence. The Associated Press reported that the panel did not rule immediately; it quoted Judge William J. Nardini describing the appeal as an “exceptionally difficult case” raising questions of first impression for federal courts. How to distinguish the case’s key decisions
- Verdict: The jury acquitted Combs of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, and convicted him on two prostitution-transportation counts.
- Bail: The judge separately denied release after the verdict and later denied a renewed request. Neither ruling changed the jury’s verdict.
- Sentence and appeal: A bail decision determines whether a defendant is released while proceedings continue; it is not itself a sentence. The appeal concerns the conviction and sentence, and the April 2026 hearing alone did not resolve it.
