Videographer Michael Oberlies says a temporary fill-in released the footage used in Netflix’s Sean Combs: The Reckoning while Oberlies was out of state—not Oberlies himself, and not because of a fee or contract dispute. Director Alexandria Stapleton says the filmmakers obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights. Sean Combs’s representative calls it stolen and unauthorized. The available accounts do not establish the full chain of custody or settle who had the right to release it.
What did videographer Michael Oberlies say?
Oberlies told Rolling Stone that he had worked for more than two years on a project profiling Combs. He said the footage was released by a third party who covered for him for three days while he was out of state. Oberlies said the release was not his and was not made by anyone authorized to handle Combs’s materials. He also denied that a payment disagreement or contract issue prompted the release.

His account identifies a temporary fill-in as the person connected to the release, but it does not name that person or trace every step by which the material reached the documentary’s filmmakers. It does not establish that Oberlies sold or authorized the footage.
What do the director and Combs’s representative say?
| Speaker | Account | What the statement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Oberlies, videographer | He said a third party who filled in for him for three days released the material while he was away; he denied a fee or contract dispute caused it. Rolling Stone | Oberlies’s account of the release. The report does not independently verify the entire transfer or establish the fill-in’s identity. |
| Alexandria Stapleton, director | She said, “It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights.” Netflix Tudum | The director’s statement about the filmmakers’ acquisition and rights; it is not a court determination. |
| Combs’s representative | The representative alleged that the footage was stolen and unauthorized, and said Netflix used private footage without transferred rights. Global News | An allegation on Combs’s behalf, not an established finding about ownership or authorization. |
These are competing claims, not a resolved account. The cited reporting does not establish who transferred the footage to the documentary team, what permissions or agreements each party held, or whether a court has ruled on the dispute. The statements alone do not prove either that the release was unlawful or that the filmmakers’ rights claim has been legally validated.

What footage is being discussed?
The dispute concerns footage of Combs in a New York hotel room in September 2024, in the days before his arrest. Netflix Tudum says the footage was filmed with Combs’s knowledge and that his federal indictment followed six days later. That context describes the recording; it does not by itself resolve whether the footage was later authorized for release.
How did 50 Cent get the Diddy footage?
The accounts do not answer that question with a complete, independently verified chain of custody. Oberlies described a third party who filled in for him as releasing the footage. Stapleton said the filmmakers received it and had the necessary rights. The cited sources do not show precisely how it passed from the person who released it to the production, and they do not establish that 50 Cent personally obtained it. The series is directed by Stapleton and executive-produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, but that credit is not evidence of who handled the footage.
