Spoilers for Scream 7: Stu Macher’s appearance is an AI deception used by the new Ghostface killers to torment Sidney Prescott—not proof that Stu survived the original film. Matthew Lillard returns to portray the AI-generated version, while director Kevin Williamson says the released ending leaves Stu dead.
How Stu appears in Scream 7
The killers use AI imagery to make familiar figures appear to return, exploiting Sidney’s painful history and uncertainty about what is real. Stu is part of that deception: his appearance brings the original Ghostface back into Sidney’s present without establishing that the living Stu has returned.

Williamson said screenwriter Guy Busick wrote the AI material. Busick described Stu’s role as a way to torment Sidney about her past, her choices, her legacy, and her purpose. He also said he was glad Stu was dead, while relishing the chance to write dialogue for the character even though “it’s not actually Stu.” ComicBook.com’s interview with Busick discusses that story function.
What the alternate ending changes—and what it doesn’t
Williamson told Esquire on March 2, 2026 that the filmmakers shot a short alternate coda suggesting Stu was alive. That footage was not selected for the released ending. Williamson said the team considered whether viewers would be disappointed if Stu were not real, but felt a living Stu would be “a big stretch”; AI made it possible to include the character without undoing the original film’s consequence.
#1 Best Overall
| Story version | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Released ending | Stu appears through an AI deception; the film does not confirm he survived. |
| Alternate coda | A filmed, unused ending suggested Stu was alive. It is not the released film’s canon ending. |
Williamson summarized the approach as wanting to “have our cake and eat it too”: include Stu in an unexpected way while keeping his survival from stretching credibility. His account is a filmmaker’s explanation of the decision, not a published numerical audience study.

Stu’s AI appearance lets the film draw on Sidney’s past without reversing the original movie’s outcome. The story uses the possibility of a familiar face returning as psychological pressure; it does not resolve that pressure by revealing a confirmed, living Stu. Matthew Lillard portrays the appearance, but the character’s presence in this form is not evidence of a resurrection.
