Why Sean “Diddy” Combs Was Denied Bail Again in August 2025

A federal judge denied Sean “Diddy” Combs’s renewed request for release on August 4, 2025, rejecting a proposed $50 million bond while he awaited sentencing. The decision followed a split jury verdict: acquittals on racketeering and sex-trafficking charges and convictions on two prostitution-related counts.

What Judge Subramanian decided

Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs’s renewed bail motion on August 4, 2025. The motion sought release pending the sentencing scheduled for October and proposed a $50 million bond. That was a proposed bond amount, not money the court ordered Combs to pay. The ruling followed conviction and addressed release before sentencing; it was not another decision on pretrial bail. The August 4 order and Associated Press coverage of the ruling describe the request and outcome.

Under the post-conviction framework, the court concluded that increasing the bond or adding release conditions would not change its decision. The AP summarized the court’s reasoning as finding that Combs had not shown the required absence of danger or exceptional circumstances for release after conviction. Those were the court’s assessments, not separate findings made here.

How this differed from the earlier bail denial

Combs had also been denied bail before trial, in November 2024. The Southern District of New York order from that proceeding considered the pretrial factors in 18 U.S.C. § 3142(g), including the alleged offense, the evidence, the defendant’s history and characteristics, and the danger posed by release. The November 2024 order concerned pretrial detention; the August 2025 request came after the jury had returned its verdict. These are different procedural stages and should not be treated as one continuing bail decision.

What happened after the August 2025 ruling

Combs was later sentenced to 50 months in prison. On April 9, 2026, the Second Circuit heard oral argument in his criminal appeal, which had been expedited. The AP reported that judges raised questions about the severity of the sentence. The AP account of the argument reports the sentence and hearing. A docket listing for appeal No. 25-2623 reviewed for this account reports coverage only through April 9, 2026; the sources cited here do not establish whether the court issued a later decision by October 8, 2026.

The verdict behind the renewed request

The jury acquitted Combs of racketeering and sex-trafficking charges but convicted him on two prostitution-related counts. The August 2025 motion therefore asked the court to release him after conviction and before sentencing—not to reconsider the jury’s verdict or release him while charges were still being tried.
