On September 10, 2025, about 100 people gathered outside Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah, as the motorcade carrying Charlie Kirk’s body departed. The impromptu vigil brought together mourners and supporters for singing, prayer, brief remarks and quiet gestures of grief. It was a hospital-side gathering—not the later memorial at Utah Valley University or a formal service.
Where and when did the vigil take place?
The gathering was outside Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem on September 10, 2025. Kirk had been taken to the hospital after he was shot at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Utah’s Department of Public Safety said he was pronounced dead hours later; its account provides the shooting and transport context, while WIRED’s report documents the vigil itself. Utah DPS’s update on the shooting
WIRED reported that roughly 100 people lined the sidewalk when the motorcade left at around 8 p.m. That time refers to the departure, not the start of the gathering. WIRED describes the vigil as impromptu; its report does not identify an official organizer. WIRED’s “A Vigil for Charlie Kirk”
What did people do at the hospital?
WIRED’s photographs and reporting capture a crowd with different relationships to Kirk and the killing: families, college students, Latter-day Saint missionaries, and members of the Proud Boys were among those present. Some sang “Amazing Grace,” prayed or listened to remarks; others cried, waved as vehicles passed, or stood watching. These are details from one observed gathering, not a measure of how Utah as a whole responded.

The scene held grief alongside political expression. WIRED recorded both appeals for peace and politically charged or conspiratorial remarks. Whitney Williamson, a 36-year-old local mourner, told WIRED: “But no one deserves to be shot no matter what your political beliefs are.” Elder Joseph Trunnel, whom WIRED identified as an 18-year-old Latter-day Saint, said: “Part of me wanted to be like him, because of how much of a genius he was.” Neither was speaking as an official representative.
