Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, visited Waikiki Primary School in Rockingham on 4 November 2024 during an Australia literary tour. She met hundreds of students, signed posters, hats and books, read a picture book in the school library and answered questions, according to The West Australian’s event report.
What happened at Waikiki Primary School
Ferguson’s appearance brought the author to the school library, where she read one of her picture books and spoke with students. The newspaper described hundreds of young students meeting her; it did not provide a precise attendance count.
Students also had books, hats and posters signed, and asked Ferguson questions. One student told the newspaper, “I’m excited to meet the Duchess because my mum said she’s famous.” Another called The Gift of Kindness a favourite, saying “it has magic in it.” These are individual student comments reported at the event.
What Ferguson told the students
The West Australian quoted Ferguson speaking about children’s right to education and self-belief: “Every single child has the right to dare to dream, the right to an education, the right to believe in themselves.”

Discussing a book’s message about being yourself, she said: “Each message in the book is that it doesn’t matter what colour your hair is … it’s okay to be exactly who you are.” The newspaper also quoted her explaining why she writes for children: “I write children’s books because I want you all to never forget how beautiful you are … I want you to never forget this moment, it’s so special.”
She also offered a sun-safety reminder in the words reported at the school: “You slip on the T-shirt, you slop on the sunscreen and you slap on a hat.” These are her remarks as reported at the event, not a separate medical or official guideline.

Which book did she read?
The event report says Ferguson read a picture book in the library but does not name the title. The Gift of Kindness, a children’s picture book published by Serenity Press, was associated with Ferguson’s literary activity in PerthNow’s June 2024 coverage. The available reports do not establish that this was the book she read aloud at Waikiki Primary.
How the school visit fit her Australia literary tour
In June 2024, PerthNow reported that Ferguson was expected to headline Perth’s inaugural Festival of Fiction in October and promote The Gift of Kindness. The West Australian later described the 4 November school appearance as part of an Australia literary tour. The two reports place the school visit in the context of her writing and public literary events, rather than a current tour announcement.

These are figures from separate reports published at different points in 2024, not a single independently established current total.
