Sasheer Zamata described herself as “one of those late-in-life lesbians” in a Them interview published September 9, 2024. She said she wanted her identity to be known while keeping the details of her personal life private.
What did Sasheer Zamata say about coming out?
In an interview with journalist Amos Mac, Zamata said: “I guess I’m one of those late-in-life lesbians. I just feel very comfortable and confident in my life.” Her remarks appeared as she discussed her role in Agatha All Along.
Zamata explained that being open about her identity did not mean making her private life public: “I’m out in my life and I do keep my personal life kind of private, but I also don’t necessarily want my identity to be private.” She said she had considered saying nothing, but silence could feel like ignoring a part of herself.
When did Zamata come out?
She made the remarks publicly in the Them interview published September 9, 2024. Us Weekly reported on the interview the next day, September 10, and reproduced her comments.

Why did she call herself a “late-in-life lesbian”?
The phrase was Zamata’s own description of reaching a point where she felt comfortable and confident in her identity. She did not present coming out as an obligation to reveal every aspect of her relationships or private life. Instead, she described choosing not to keep her identity private.
On the broader expectation that people explain how they came to understand their sexuality, Zamata said, “No one asks straight people about their journey of discovery.” Us Weekly reproduced that remark in its account of the Them interview.

How did her acting roles fit into her account?
Zamata said she had been cast repeatedly as queer women—in Home Economics, Woke, Tuca & Bertie, and The Last O.G.—before she was figuring out her own identity. She recalled wondering what casting directors saw that she was not seeing herself.
That is her retrospective account of the timing. It does not mean the roles caused or determined her sexuality. At the time of the interview, she was playing Jennifer Kale in Agatha All Along; Us Weekly also noted her Saturday Night Live cast tenure from 2014 to 2017.
