Sapphic Comics and WLW Graphic Novels: Growing Visibility, Not a Proven Global Boom

Sapphic comics and WLW graphic novels are gaining visibility, but the strongest sales figures are either title-specific or broader than sapphic books alone.

Sapphic comics and women-loving-women (WLW) graphic novels are gaining visibility, with notable successes in Girls’ Love manga and evidence of growth in Canada’s broader LGBTQ+ comics category. The available figures do not prove that sapphic comics are growing uniformly worldwide: the strongest market data cover LGBTQ+ books generally, while the clearest sapphic-specific evidence comes from individual titles.

What “sapphic,” “WLW” and “yuri” mean in comics

“Sapphic” and “WLW” describe stories involving women who love women, but they are broad reader-facing terms rather than a single publishing category. “Yuri,” also called Girls’ Love, is a manga category often centered on relationships between women. Its stories vary in tone and intended audience, and it is not interchangeable with every Western graphic novel featuring sapphic characters.

That distinction matters when interpreting sales news. A jump in a broad LGBTQ+ category cannot be presented as a measured increase in sapphic comics alone, and success for one Girls’ Love manga does not establish a worldwide trend across all formats and markets.

What the sales evidence actually shows

Canada: growth in LGBTQ+ comics overall

BookNet Canada reported that Canadian sales for “Comics & Graphic Novels / LGBTQ+” rose 36% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the second quarter of 2025. That is a defined, year-over-year increase in a Canadian category spanning LGBTQ+ comics; it is not a sapphic-only statistic. BookNet also displayed a 14,000% increase for its narrower “Comics & Graphic Novels / LGBTQ+ / Lesbian” category, but the published excerpt does not provide the base sales volume or enough methodology to determine what that percentage means for market size or sustained growth. It should not be read as evidence that lesbian comics sales broadly multiplied by that amount. BookNet Canada’s Q2 2026 report

A breakout Girls’ Love manga

One clear title-level success is Sumiko Arai’s The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All. In a March 2025 interview, Yen Press sales and marketing director Mark de Vera said it was a rare Girls’ Love manga to enter the BookScan Top 20, and that the series brought some readers to their first Girls’ Love manga. Publishers Weekly reported in April 2025 that the first volume had gone through multiple printings within five months of release and volume two was already on its second printing. Those are point-in-time reports about a particular series, not current stock information or proof of category-wide sales growth. Other figures that are easy to misread

Circana reported that U.S. LGBTQ fiction sales reached 6.1 million units in the 12 months ending May 2023, up 11% from the preceding 12 months and 173% from its 2019 benchmark. It also reported 1 million U.S. LGBTQ romance novel units in that same 12-month period, up 40% year over year. These figures describe fiction and romance books, not comic or graphic-novel sales, and should not be used as direct evidence for sapphic comics. Circana’s LGBTQ fiction figures

Why visibility is growing beyond sales charts

Libraries and publishers are also making queer comics easier to find. The American Library Association’s 2026 LGBTQIA+ graphic novel collaboration core list contains 106 titles across juvenile, young adult and adult sections. It is a curated LGBTQIA+ resource for librarians and readers—not a sapphic-only list or a sales measure. The ALA announcement and list details

Western comics provide title-specific examples as well. Image Comics described Bingo Love as the story of two Black queer women whose relationship spans decades, and announced a reprint after support from fans and retailers. That demonstrates interest in one book, not a market-wide sales trend. Image Comics’ announcement about Bingo Love

How to find a sapphic comic that fits

Rather than treating “sapphic comic” as one genre, look for the elements you want in the story. A library can be a useful starting point: the ALA core list covers multiple age sections, while bookshops and comics shops can help distinguish manga categories from Western graphic novels.

  • Format: Look for Girls’ Love or yuri manga if you want a manga format; search for sapphic or WLW graphic novels for Western comics.
  • Age range: Check whether a title is intended for juvenile, young adult or adult readers. A relationship between women does not by itself tell you the book’s age range.
  • Genre and tone: Romance, fantasy, memoir, horror and slice-of-life stories offer very different reading experiences.
  • How central the relationship is: Some books foreground a romance; others feature sapphic characters within a larger ensemble or plot.
  • Creator perspective and representation: If this matters to you, check the creator’s own description or an interview rather than assuming a character’s identity indicates the creator’s.
  • Format availability: Confirm whether the edition you want is available in print or digital form; availability can vary by title and region.

For recommendations, asking a librarian or bookseller for sapphic graphic novels by genre and age range is often more useful than asking for a generic “WLW comic.” Readers also use that language in community recommendation requests, including requests for sapphic graphic novels and requests for Western comics featuring WLW characters.

What “on the rise” can—and cannot—mean

The evidence supports a careful conclusion: sapphic and queer comics have visible points of momentum, including a Girls’ Love manga reaching an unusual sales milestone, a Canadian year-over-year increase in LGBTQ+ comics sales, and sustained attention from libraries and publishers. It does not establish a uniform worldwide boom in sapphic comics. The categories, countries, formats and time periods behind the evidence differ, so the most accurate description is growing visibility alongside specific successes—not a single proven global growth rate.
