Mountain Dew’s 2025 Super Bowl ad is called “Kiss From a Lime,” and its central image is exactly what the title’s pun promises: singer Seal appears as a seal, singing a Baja Blast rewrite of “Kiss from a Rose” to Becky G. The human face on an animal body, especially its hands and whiskers, gives the spot its uncanny, disturbing edge. That reaction is an interpretation, not a universal response; the ad also drew praise for its song adaptation.
What happens in “Kiss From a Lime”
The 2025 Mountain Dew Baja Blast commercial pairs Becky G and the Mountain Dude with a special guest: Seal, transformed into a seal. He performs a Baja Blast-themed version of “Kiss from a Rose,” with lyrics rewritten for the campaign. The title turns the song’s familiar “kiss” into “lime,” nodding to the soda’s citrus-and-lime flavor message. Marketing Brew’s interview reported the lyric rewrite; PepsiCo’s campaign recap described the cast and product message.
The ad was a 30-second spot, according to BET’s interview about the commercial. Its joke depends on recognizing both Seal the singer and the animal: the name pun is not just spoken, but rendered as a visual transformation.
Why the seal transformation can feel disturbing
Seal’s recognizable human face sits on a seal’s body, while hands and whiskers emphasize the mismatch. The Washington Post singled out those details in its “Most disturbing visual” category, although it also praised the song adaptation. That editorial judgment helps explain the reaction without making it a fact about every viewer. The image is surreal by design; familiar features combined in an unfamiliar form can make a comic premise feel uncanny rather than simply cute.

The spot sets that visual surprise against a sentimental, widely recognizable pop song. One device asks viewers to recognize and enjoy a musical callback; the other asks them to process an exaggerated human-animal hybrid. Their contrast is the ad’s central tension: nostalgic familiarity arrives through a strangely literal joke. The Washington Post’s review called the hands and whiskers unsettling while describing the song adaptation as a “banger.”
What Mountain Dew said it wanted from the ad
PepsiCo marketing executive Mark Kirkham told Marketing Brew that the campaign aimed to balance nostalgia with Gen Z appeal. Seal supplied the nostalgic musical connection, while Becky G was intended to connect with younger viewers. Kirkham also described the goal as being distinctive and memorable: “You’ve got to not only be memorable, you got to be memorable for something.” Those are the brand’s stated objectives, not evidence that the ad changed buying behavior.

The campaign therefore puts two kinds of recognition to work: a familiar singer and song, and a deliberately odd visual gag. The product link is Baja Blast, which Marketing Brew described as a lime-flavored tropical soda; PepsiCo’s recap emphasized the citrus-and-lime message.
How critics and measurement described the reaction
Reception was not simply “liked” or “disliked.” The Washington Post made a sharply negative-sounding judgment about the visual while praising the music. Ipsos described the commercial as an “entertaining, yet polarizing execution” and placed it in its “Second-Screen Sensation” category. Ipsos reported that the ad’s Social Power result ranked in the top 5% of its Creative|Spark database and that it had trending mentions on platforms such as TikTok.

That top-5% figure is Ipsos’s creative-performance measure, not a finding that 95% of viewers liked the commercial, a measure of audience share, or a sales result. Ipsos said its Creative|Spark testing sampled 150 U.S. adults aged 18–65 per ad; its separate post-game FastFacts survey included 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18–65. Those are study-method details, not a nationwide census. No cited source reports a causal sales lift from this particular commercial.

The cited campaign and contemporaneous coverage do not establish that the spot was AI-generated. The surreal appearance alone is not evidence of AI use, so it is more accurate to describe the visible transformation and the audience reaction than to assign an unverified production method.
