For readers choosing September nonfiction, William Dalrymple’s The Golden Road leads a six-book list that ranges from ancient cultural exchange to constitutional equality. The other titles explore Indian Ocean migration, the life of anthropologist Irawati Karve, Indian art, and the working lives of writers.
Six books, six ways into South Asian history and culture
Scroll.in’s August 31, 2024 roundup presents these titles as publisher-blurb descriptions, not as a ranking or a set of independent reviews. Together, they offer different scales and approaches: a sweeping historical synthesis, a family-history journey, a biography, an argument about aesthetics, interviews about writing, and a legal-philosophical examination of equality.

Ancient India’s connections beyond the subcontinent
The Golden Road — William Dalrymple
Dalrymple’s book takes the broadest geographical view in the list. Its publisher-derived description frames ancient India not only as a recipient of influences but also as an exporter of ideas and cultural forms across Eurasia, from the Red Sea to the Pacific. The subjects named include art, religions, technology, astronomy, music, dance, literature, mathematics, and mythology.
The examples point to different kinds of connection: Angkor Wat, the spread of Buddhism in China, trade linked to Roman wealth, and the circulation of numerals including zero. This is the pick for readers drawn to a large-scale account of exchange across regions and fields, rather than one centered on a single person or place.

Migration, family history and the Indian Ocean
The Other Mohan in Britain’s Indian Ocean Empire — Amrita Shah
Shah begins with a personal inquiry into her great-grandfather and uses it as a route into the history of Indian Ocean migration and diaspora. The description connects Surat and colonial Bombay with migrant communities and lives shaped by movement across the region.
Those lives include indentured workers, traders, lascars, political prisoners, and interpreters. The book’s approach is therefore both intimate and expansive: a family-history question opens onto the varied roles and experiences that made up a wider migration history.
