Set in 1868, five years after the Civil War, it follows former Confederate colonel Morsman Carver as he hunts Gideon, a former Union officer played by Pierce Brosnan, across wilderness terrain. Liam Neeson plays Carver in the 2007 film directed by David Von Ancken.
Is Seraphim Falls based on a true story?
No. Netflix describes Seraphim Falls as fictional and identifies it as an original screenplay, rather than a dramatization of real events. Its Civil War setting and historical atmosphere do not make the characters or central pursuit a documented account.
Is Seraphim Falls based on a book?
No. The film was written as an original screenplay by director David Von Ancken and co-writer Abby Everett Jaques; it is not an adaptation of a novel. Netflix identifies this as Von Ancken’s feature directorial debut, following his television work.
What is Seraphim Falls about?
Five years after the Civil War, Carver leads a small group in pursuit of Gideon, whom he blames for a wartime atrocity. Gideon relies on his trapping and survival skills to evade Carver and the four men pursuing him: Hayes, Parsons, Pope, and Kid. The chase crosses alpine mountains and desert country, while the history between the two men gradually turns a revenge story toward questions of war, suffering, and forgiveness.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This overview avoids revealing the concealed wartime history that explains the pursuit. The film’s two leads offered their own interpretations of its themes: Brosnan said it “speaks real quietly about the meaninglessness of war,” while Neeson said he was drawn to it because “it had an act of forgiveness in it.” Those are the actors’ comments about the story, not claims that it recounts actual events.
Where does the story take place, and where was it filmed?
The story is set in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains in 1868, according to Netflix. The production filmed in New Mexico and Oregon, so the on-screen landscape should not be mistaken for a record of events shot in the story’s Nevada setting. Neeson recalled filming in a New Mexico winter with limited daylight.

What kind of Western is it?
The film puts pursuit and survival at the center of its Western setting, then uses the characters’ unresolved Civil War history to probe the cost of vengeance. In a 2007 interview, Neeson said he had wanted to make a Western and was attracted to the script’s “spare and sparse and elemental” quality. Brosnan likewise described its restrained approach to storytelling. Their remarks offer context for the film’s mood without changing its status as fiction.
