Serena Williams made a surprise appearance at Maria Sharapova’s International Tennis Hall of Fame induction in Newport, Rhode Island, in August 2025, and introduced the former rival whose career had pushed her to compete harder. Williams described their relationship as having grown from rivalry to respect and, eventually, friendship.
What happened at Sharapova’s induction
At the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s 2025 induction ceremony in Newport, Sharapova and doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan joined the Hall. Williams surprised the audience by appearing to introduce Sharapova. The US Open’s account says Sharapova had texted Williams a few months earlier to ask her to give the introduction; Williams agreed before she had finished asking.
Williams welcomed her with a tribute that acknowledged both their competition and their changed relationship: “What started as a rivalry turned into an enormous amount of respect. What grew from respect has turned to friendship. Maria didn’t just win matches, she built a legacy that will last forever. Tonight was my honor as Maria’s former rival, former fan, now her forever friend, to welcome her into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.”
The ATP Tour’s ceremony account reports Williams’s remarks. The tribute was more than a formal welcome: it placed the induction in the context of a rivalry both women said had helped bring out their best tennis.

Why their rivalry mattered
A rivalry that began with a major final
Sharapova’s first major singles title came at Wimbledon in 2004, when she defeated Williams in the final. That breakthrough gave their rivalry an unmistakable starting point in the public imagination: the young champion had beaten one of the sport’s leading players on a major stage.
Williams held the head-to-head advantage
The WTA reported in 2025 that Williams won 20 of their 22 meetings, including 19 consecutive matches. Those figures describe their on-court record, not the full meaning either player attached to the rivalry. Williams said Sharapova was among the few opponents who made her raise her level whenever they faced one another. As the Associated Press reported, Williams said: “There are only a few players in my career who challenged me to be the very best, every single time we stepped out on the court. Maria Sharapova was one of them. Whenever I saw her name next to mine in the draw, I made sure I practiced harder.”

Sharapova’s major-title legacy
Sharapova won five major singles titles: Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008, and Roland-Garros in 2012 and 2014. The titles and the head-to-head record are different measures of achievement; neither alone captures what the two players said they drew from competing against one another.
How both players described the rivalry
Williams recalled that Sharapova’s name in a tournament draw prompted her to practice harder. Sharapova, in turn, described having a rival who motivated her to reach the highest levels as a gift. The AP reported her words: “It’s a gift to have someone who motivates you to reach those heights. And I’ll forever be grateful for bringing out the best in me.”

Their comments give the ceremony its personal dimension. Williams’s dominant record did not make the rivalry irrelevant to her: she credited Sharapova with demanding more from her. Sharapova likewise spoke of the competitive drive between them as something for which she remained grateful. At the induction, Williams framed that history not as something erased by friendship, but as the foundation from which respect had grown.
