That was an interpretation of the exchange, not proof that Gomez was annoyed or that the interview broke down. The appearance came three days after the release of Rare, the album she was there to discuss.
When Selena Gomez appeared on the show—and why
The official episode guide for January 13, 2020 lists Gomez as a guest discussing Rare. AceShowbiz reported that the album had been released on January 10, making the interview part of its immediate release-period promotion.
Why some viewers called the interview awkward
Contemporary coverage described a split in how viewers read Gomez’s delivery. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reported that some thought she seemed annoyed or that Ripa was struggling to draw information out of her. AceShowbiz also reported differing reactions. These were audience comments and entertainment-media characterizations, not representative polling or a verified account of Gomez’s feelings.
The phrase “Kelly Ripa struggling to hold the conversation” captures one reading of the on-air exchange, but the available reporting does not establish hostility, conflict, or a breakdown. Calling the interview awkward is best understood as a description of how some people perceived its rhythm, not an objective diagnosis of either participant.

What was reported about Gomez’s sleep
Sleep came up as context in reports about the reaction. Showbiz Cheat Sheet quoted a viewer who said Gomez had mentioned getting only a couple of hours of sleep and did not seem annoyed to that viewer. AceShowbiz reported that makeup artist Hung Vann Go’s Instagram Stories showed Gomez saying she was on three hours of sleep. These accounts do not establish that tiredness caused her manner during the televised interview.
What Gomez discussed beyond the album
ELLE’s January 13 coverage reported that Gomez spoke about trying to go incognito in Paris. It also clarified that a Hawaii sting story involved a bee, not a jellyfish. AceShowbiz likewise covered the bee anecdote. These details offer a clearer sense of the interview’s subjects than the reaction-focused “awkward interview” label alone.
