Serena Williams faced online criticism after appearing in a Ro commercial promoting GLP-1 weight-management treatment during Super Bowl LX. Some viewers objected to a prominent athlete marketing prescription weight-loss medication; other reactions were supportive, and tennis player Holger Rune publicly defended her. The criticism reported by news outlets reflects examples of online comments, not a poll of viewers.
What was in the Ro Super Bowl ad?
SportBible reported that the commercial showed Williams using an injection and ordering a pill-form treatment through Ro’s app. India Today likewise described Williams using an injectable pen and the app, and reported that she credited Zepbound provided through Ro for her weight loss. That account of her treatment and personal experience is the outlet’s reporting, not an independent assessment of her health or care.
Ro is the company behind the campaign. Its weight-management service page currently identifies Williams as an ambassador and describes access to prescription GLP-1 medication after a health consultation and provider review, with support and insurance assistance. A provider determines eligibility; the commercial relationship does not establish that a particular treatment is suitable for any individual.
Why did some viewers criticize it?
Reported objections centered on a famous athlete promoting prescription weight-loss medication and on concerns that the ad could normalize its use. SportBible quoted one commenter asking, “Why was Serena Williams in a GLP-1 ad? What’s going on there??” and another writing, “Serena Williams pushing weight loss drugs…disgusting.” Ynet also quoted a viewer saying, “Disgusting that she’s trying to push weight-loss drugs,” and reported that some viewers had expected a comeback announcement.

TheWrap situated the response within broader viewer criticism of several Super Bowl LX ads, including reactions shaped by years of public scrutiny of Williams’s body. These are examples selected and reported by publications, not evidence that viewers generally opposed the ad or that it changed public attitudes.
Not all reactions were negative
Coverage also recorded supportive comments. SportBible quoted professional tennis player Holger Rune defending Williams against shaming for her approach to weight loss: “There is not one right or wrong way here, there is only the way that is good for you and we should not shame on this.” His comment was a personal defense of Williams, not medical advice.

What the controversy does—and does not—establish
The dispute is about celebrity marketing and its influence, which is distinct from an individual clinician’s prescribing decision. The available reporting does not establish whether a medication was clinically appropriate for Williams, how GLP-1 medicines typically work for patients, or their risks and benefits. Personal weight-loss figures reported in coverage should be understood as claims attributed to Williams, not population-level evidence.
