What the sales figures do—and do not—measure
“Copies sold” can suggest physical albums alone, but music-industry sales and chart measures may count more than physical copies. A UK Official Charts report on ÷’s first week broke its 672,000 chart-sales units into physical sales, downloads and streaming-equivalent sales. That opening-week figure is a chart measure, not a count of 672,000 physical copies. Official Charts’ report on ÷’s opening week.

×’s separate worldwide milestone
For 2014, IFPI reported 4.4 million global sales for ×, counting physical and digital album sales and excluding streams. That is a worldwide figure for that year under IFPI’s stated definition, not a lifetime global total and not directly comparable with the UK cumulative total in the table. ÷ also had an exceptional UK opening in 2017: Official Charts reported 672,000 first-week chart sales, with physical, download and streaming-equivalent components. Sheeran responded: “Wow!
