Selma Blair Says She’s in MS Remission but Still Lives With Pain

Selma Blair has described being in MS remission while still experiencing pain, stiffness and other health effects. Her comments do not assign every symptom to one cause.

Selma Blair has said that her multiple sclerosis (MS) is in remission while she continues to experience pain. In a January 2024 health update, she said, “I hurt all the time.” She also discussed Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and intermittent dystonia, so the reports do not establish that all of her pain is caused by MS.

What Selma Blair has said about her MS and pain

Blair was diagnosed with MS in 2018. In a video update reported by Good Morning America on January 31, 2024, she said her MS remained “fine” and in remission. She also said she was due for an MRI and bloodwork. Those are statements from that date, not confirmation of her current medical status.

In the same update, Blair described ongoing pain: “I hurt all the time.” Her account makes clear that remission and pain can coexist for her; it does not identify a single cause for every painful symptom.

What remission means—and what it does not mean

In a PBS interview published November 29, 2022, Blair described her personal understanding of remission as “I’m no longer forming lesions on the brain.” She discussed continuing effects, including sensitivity to sunlight and difficulty speaking in bright sun, while saying her MS was not active and she was in remission.

That was Blair’s explanation of her own situation, not a universal clinical definition. Remission should not be rewritten as “cured” or “symptom-free”: a person may describe their disease as in remission while still experiencing symptoms or other health problems.

Other conditions and possible sources of pain

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

In the January 2024 update, Blair said Ehlers-Danlos syndrome made her very stiff and that she could pull muscles too easily, leading to injuries. The report presents it as a separate condition she discussed—not as an explanation for every instance of her pain.

Dystonia and MS-related effects

Good Morning America reported that Blair’s dystonia, described there as a complication of MS, still comes and goes. Her account distinguishes that intermittent symptom from the stiffness and injuries she associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Can MS remission and pain occur at the same time?

Yes. “Remission” does not mean that a person is necessarily free of pain. The MS Society’s 2022 guide to pain and unpleasant sensations in MS explains that pain can take different forms and may result from nerve damage in the brain or spinal cord, or from symptoms and the physical strain they cause. That general information helps explain how pain and remission can coexist, but it cannot determine the cause of Blair’s pain.

Why the dates matter

The latest dated health update in these reports is from January 2024; Blair’s PBS interview was published in November 2022. Neither source establishes her clinical status as of October 2026. They support a careful, time-bounded account: Blair said her MS was in remission and that she continued to hurt, while also describing other health issues.
