Which outfits did Jill Biden wear again?
Gabriela Hearst floral dress, reworked
Biden wore a Gabriela Hearst floral dress for the 2021 inauguration ball, then appeared in a navy version at President Biden’s first joint address to Congress that spring. Vogue reported that Hearst said the dress had originally been used to fit the inauguration look and Biden asked that it be salvaged for another occasion. When did Biden use clothes to communicate a message?
Some of the most discussed choices had an explicit slogan or a reported symbolic reading, but those are not the same thing as a designer’s stated intention. Biden wore boots bearing the word “Vote” and a jacket marked “Love”; Vogue’s 2021 coverage also connected her clothing choices to a theme of unity. The embroidered state and territorial flowers on the Hearst inauguration ensemble are a documented design feature, while Delaware’s placement above her heart is a reported detail. The two January 20 looks combine identifiable designers, specific material and embroidery details, a major public occasion and a lasting museum record. Recalling O’Neill’s designs, Biden said they seemed “both timeless and new,” adding that she hoped to reflect the passion, creativity and hope she associated with young voters.
