How the original film set up the cast
Sony’s synopsis for the 1984 film follows Daniel LaRusso, newly arrived in Los Angeles, as he becomes a target of the Cobra Kai students and asks Mr. Miyagi to teach him karate. Ali Mills, played by Elisabeth Shue, is part of Daniel’s story; the film’s central relationship is the one between student and mentor. Which actors returned to the franchise?
Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso
Macchio returned as Daniel opposite William Zabka in Cobra Kai, which premiered in 2018. He later played Daniel again in Karate Kid: Legends, a return he discussed in a May 2025 interview with The Guardian. In that interview, Macchio was described as 63; that age refers to the article’s publication date, not a timeless description. The Guardian’s interview with Ralph Macchio covers his return and career.
William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence
Zabka reprised Johnny, Daniel’s rival in the 1984 film, in Cobra Kai. The series developed their rivalry into a more complicated relationship over six seasons. Netflix said the series concluded its run in 2025. Reflecting on the change in his relationship with Macchio, Macchio told Netflix: “If you would’ve told me that I’d be 40 years later working as Daniel LaRusso with William Zabka, and Johnny Lawrence would become one of my best friends, I would just say, ‘What? Please, that’s never happening.’ ” Netflix Tudum’s account of the series finale discusses the show’s ending and its long-running character arcs.

What happened to the rest of the original cast?
The documented updates above are not a complete status list for every actor in the 1984 ensemble. Martin Kove played John Kreese and Randee Heller played Lucille LaRusso, but the sources cited here do not establish a detailed current update on either performer. Rather than imply that every original cast member returned—or guess at the rest of their present-day careers—it is more accurate to distinguish the confirmed franchise returns from the specific later-life updates available for Morita and McQueen.
