Paul Oetken dismissed several claims in producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones’s lawsuit against Sean Combs and other defendants, but allowed Jones’s sexual-assault claim against Combs to proceed past the motion-to-dismiss stage. The ruling did not determine whether Jones’s allegations were true or whether Combs was liable.
What the lawsuit is about
Jones, a music producer, sued Combs and other defendants over conduct he alleged occurred while he worked on Combs’s “Love” album between September 2022 and September 2023. The court’s opinion describes the complaint’s allegations in the context of deciding a motion to dismiss; those allegations should not be treated as established facts. Why Combs sought dismissal
In a contemporaneous account of the defense motion, the Associated Press reported that Combs argued Jones lacked standing, that the complaint omitted essential details such as when and where alleged incidents occurred, and that it failed to state viable claims. These were arguments by Combs’s defense, not findings by Judge Oetken. Associated Press report reproduced by The Charlotte Post.
What the judge dismissed—and what survived
Judge Oetken granted the Combs defendants’ motion in part and denied it in part. The order dismissed the following claims or defendants:

- Jones’s claims under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
- His claims for negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
- His contract claims.
- The Trafficking Victims Protection Act claim against Combs Global.
- Claims against John and Jane Doe defendants and ABC corporations.
The motion was otherwise denied. In discussing the sexual-assault claim against Combs, the court said Jones’s allegations were sufficient to state a plausible claim under at least Florida law. That means the claim survived this motion; it is not a finding that the alleged assault occurred or that Combs is liable. Court opinion and order, March 24, 2025.
What a motion to dismiss decides
A motion to dismiss tests whether a complaint may proceed under the applicable pleading rules. At this stage, the judge evaluates whether the claims are legally sufficient to continue; the ruling itself does not resolve the truth of the allegations. Here, some legal theories were dismissed while the sexual-assault claim against Combs cleared that procedural stage.

How to describe the ruling accurately
The precise description is that Jones’s sexual-assault claim against Combs survived the March 2025 motion to dismiss, while several other claims were dismissed. The order is not a verdict or a determination of liability. The order establishes the ruling as of March 24, 2025; later case developments are not established here.
