James Chance, the saxophonist, singer and no wave bandleader also known as James White, died in New York on June 18, 2024, at 71. His family did not disclose a cause of death; his brother said Chance’s health had been declining for several years.
What happened to James Chance?
Chance’s brother, David Siegfried, announced his death through the musician’s official website on June 18, 2024. The family’s announcement did not identify a specific illness or cause. The official announcement said his health had been in decline for several years. Contemporaneous reports by The Guardian and Pitchfork likewise reported that no cause had been given.
Who was James Chance?
Born James Alan Siegfried in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chance became a central figure in New York’s late-1970s no wave scene. He was a singer, saxophonist, bandleader and composer, and also performed as James White. The Guardian describes him as a keyboard player as well.
No wave rejected conventional punk and new wave formulas in favor of experimental noise, minimalism and jagged rhythms. Chance’s music brought punk and rock aggression together with funk and free-jazz improvisation. As he put it in an interview cited by The Guardian, “I just didn’t fit into the jazz scene at all.” He also said, “My whole attitude, my own personal style and everything was more out of rock’n roll.”

The bands and recordings that define his early work
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks
After moving from Milwaukee to New York in the 1970s, Chance formed Teenage Jesus and the Jerks with Lydia Lunch. The group’s abrasive, stripped-down sound became one of the defining expressions of no wave.
The Contortions and No New York
Chance went on to form the Contortions, another leading band in the scene. Both groups appeared on Brian Eno’s No New York, a compilation The Guardian describes as a key document of no wave. It is a useful listening starting point for hearing the scene’s range and the contrast between Chance’s two early bands.

How his career reached beyond no wave
Chance’s later projects included James White and the Blacks, the Flaming Demonics, James Chance & the Sardonic Symphonics, James Chance and Terminal City, and James Chance and Les Contortions. One of his most dance-oriented moments came when August Darnell, also known as Kid Creole, remixed “Contort Yourself” into a dancefloor hit, according to The Guardian.
He also played saxophone for Blondie on the band’s 1999 album No Exit—a reminder that his career crossed from downtown experimental music into wider pop and dance contexts.
