Pompompurin took first, followed by Cinnamoroll, Pochacco and Kuromi. The result settles the 2025 contest, though the official sources disagree on its total vote count and do not establish how many consecutive years Kitty had missed the top spot.
What happened in the 2025 ranking?
Sanrio’s 2025 contest was the 40th edition of its annual character ranking, which began in 1986 in the company’s Strawberry News publication. The launch announcement listed 90 characters and scheduled voting from April 10 through May 25, 2025. Sanrio announced the final rankings, covering places 1–90, on June 29 at SANRIO FES 2025 in Yokohama. Sanrio’s launch announcement provided the schedule and entry details.
Where did Hello Kitty place?
Hello Kitty finished fifth overall. Sanrio’s 2026 retrospective confirms that placement and lists Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Pochacco and Kuromi ahead of her. Sanrio’s 2026 retrospective describes the 2025 top five.
The Japanese results page gives the first three characters’ vote counts: Pompompurin received 5,613,659, Cinnamoroll 5,427,983 and Pochacco 3,935,101. It does not establish Hello Kitty’s individual total in the sources cited here. Sanrio’s 2025 overall results list the leading vote totals and final order.

How many votes were cast?
Sanrio’s official pages give two different totals for the 2025 ranking. The 2025 Japanese results page prints 63,160,696 votes; the company’s 2026 retrospective reports 63,166,096 and calls it the event’s highest total. The difference is 5,400 votes. These figures should not be combined or treated as interchangeable: both are Sanrio sources, and neither explains the discrepancy.
Was this really a losing streak?
Fifth place is confirmed, but the available official information does not establish a consecutive-year streak or its length. Calling the result part of a “losing streak” is therefore a headline characterization, not a verified count. A ranking position reflects votes in this particular contest; by itself, it does not show that Hello Kitty’s merchandise sales, public awareness or commercial performance declined.

How voting worked—and why you can’t vote now
The 2025 voting window closed on May 25, 2025, so ballots for that edition are no longer open. At launch, Sanrio said anyone could vote and listed several routes, including web ballots, ballots tied to purchases at Sanrio shops or its online shop, and paper ballots in Strawberry News. Some options required membership or particular activities.
- Sanrio+ members could use Smile points or tickets earned through daily voting and games.
- Other listed routes included a “Heart Atsume” stage reward and searches for participating partner characters on business or organization sites and products.
- Sanrio also listed voting methods beyond its own channels.
Sanrio’s 2025 launch announcement describes the available methods and the contest timetable.

How to read the overseas results
The overall fifth-place result is separate from country- and region-specific rankings. Sanrio’s overseas results page places Hello Kitty third in mainland China; that local position does not replace or contradict her fifth place in the overall ranking. Sanrio’s overseas results show the separate geographic tables.
