Sarah Ferguson’s 2023 breast cancer operation was a single mastectomy that reportedly lasted eight hours, according to The Independent. Her spokesperson said the surgery was successful. The duration is a media report, not a figure confirmed by an operative record.
What was reported about the operation?
Ferguson’s spokesperson announced in June 2023 that she had undergone surgery after breast cancer was found through routine mammogram screening. The Independent later reported that the operation was a single mastectomy and that the spokesperson described it as lasting eight hours. The available accounts do not establish the specific surgical technique or reconstruction method.
How was the cancer found, and what did Ferguson say about it?
According to The Independent’s reporting, a shadow was seen on a routine mammogram in May or June 2023, and a biopsy confirmed breast cancer. Her spokesperson said the cancer had caused no symptoms and that doctors had given her a good prognosis.
In later interview coverage, Ferguson said the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes and that she did not need chemotherapy. Those are details from her account; the reports do not provide her full pathology information, cancer subtype, or stage. A “good prognosis” as reported by her spokesperson should not be read as confirmation that she was cured.

What was the later melanoma diagnosis?
In January 2024, Ferguson disclosed a separate diagnosis of malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The Associated Press reported that the melanoma was found after moles were removed during reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy; doctors were assessing whether it had been caught early. ITV reported her statement crediting her dermatologist: “It was thanks to the great vigilance of my dermatologist that the melanoma was detected when it was.” The cited reports do not establish the eventual outcome of that diagnosis.
