In an August 29, 2025, interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Carpenter said the image had not prompted concern among the friends and family who saw her art first. She described its meaning in terms of control and lack of control, while critics and fans offered sharply different readings.
What Carpenter said surprised her
Carpenter told King that the cover had not been a subject of discussion among the people closest to her before its public release. “I think between me and my friends and my family and the people that I always share my music and my art with first, it was … it just wasn’t even a conversation,” she said. CBS News reported the interview on August 29, 2025.
Her surprise describes the reaction she encountered; it does not mean that all viewers shared her initial response to the image.
What the original cover showed
The original artwork, released June 11, 2025, showed Carpenter kneeling beside a standing person who pulled her hair. It was the cover for Man’s Best Friend, her seventh album. On June 25, Carpenter posted an alternate cover, jokingly described as “approved by God.” That image showed her standing beside a man. The album was released August 29. The Los Angeles Times recounted the cover chronology; the reporting establishes that the alternate appeared amid criticism, but does not establish that the backlash was the reason for the change.

Why viewers disagreed about the image
The debate centered on whether the image suggested submission and control over women or used those ideas satirically. Critics, including Glasgow Women’s Aid, objected to what they saw as a regressive depiction of women and control. Some fans defended the cover as satire. The Forbes report and the Associated Press report describe the divided response. These are competing interpretations, not a single settled meaning.
Carpenter’s interpretation: control and choice
Carpenter said she wanted the cover to remain open to interpretation. She explained her own reading this way: “My interpretation is being in on the control. Being in on your lack of control and when you want to be in control.” She added, “I think as a young woman, you’re just as aware of when you’re in control as when you’re not.”

In the interview, King read a fan comment, and Carpenter responded, “Y’all need to get out more.” The line conveyed her reaction to that comment; it does not settle the broader disagreement over how the cover reads.

In a later 2025 interview with Variety, Carpenter connected the image to attempts to control women and to feeling emotionally pulled around in past relationships. She also acknowledged that viewers could have a valid interpretation different from her intent. That follow-up adds context to her explanation without changing the fact that her “shocked” remark came in the earlier CBS Mornings interview. Variety’s later interview also reported the album’s commercial reception, which is separate from the debate over its artwork.
