Saif Ali Khan called his work on Laal Kaptaan “by far the hardest thing I have done” because the role demanded sustained physical adjustment as well as training and choreography. In a 2019 interview with Scroll, he described learning to inhabit the film’s heavily costumed Naga sadhu: handling a horse and weapons, moving in heavy wigs and clothes, and becoming agile enough for its sword fights and somersaults.
Why Khan called the role his hardest work
Asked whether the action was difficult to achieve, Khan said: “There was training, practice and choreography, and it is by far the hardest thing I have done. It couldn’t be more mentally or physically demanding, and I am very proud of it.” The statement was his assessment of the work, not a claim that the film contained more action than every other project he had made.
In the same interview, he described Laal Kaptaan’s action as comparatively restrained beside his work in Sacred Games and Tanhaji. Its sword fights and somersaults still required him to learn agility, especially while wearing heavy wigs. He spoke about training and choreography, but did not claim to have performed every action without assistance.
The character and the film’s setting
In Navdeep Singh’s Laal Kaptaan, Khan plays a Naga sadhu who is also a gun for hire driven by revenge. Scroll describes the story as taking place 25 years after the 1764 Battle of Buxar; that is the film’s setting as reported in the interview, rather than an independent historical account.

Khan said his interest in history and knowledge of the period helped him prepare mentally. He also drew on literature about the badlands and on the film’s violent, unsettled backdrop. The historical atmosphere gave him material to consider as he shaped a character he described as “wolf-like.”
What wearing the costume demanded
Khan recalled sitting up late during filming to think through how to become the character. The first day brought immediate practical obstacles: sunlight, heavy wigs and clothes, weapons, and a horse. He said it took several days to get used to the costume.

That adjustment went beyond looking the part. He learned to move in the outfit and eventually to eat, joke, and dance while wearing it. His account gives a concrete reason for the role’s physical demands: the costume and equipment were not just visual details, but conditions he had to work with throughout performance.
Learning not to be dominated by the costume
Khan connected the challenge to advice Gary Oldman gave about playing Dracula: “you should not let the costume wear you.” Khan said, “I didn’t know what he meant until I was shooting Laal Kaptaan.” In context, he was describing how the advice became clear only when he had to perform inside the heavy costume himself.
