Sabar Bonda, also known as Cactus Pears, follows a young man returning to rural western India after his father’s death, where a ten-day mourning period brings him close to Balya, a farmer and childhood friend. Writer-director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade’s feature debut sets their romance amid grief, family obligation and expectations around marriage—a queer love story rooted in rural, lower-class life rather than an urban setting.
What is Sabar Bonda about?
Anand (Bhushaan Manoj) travels back to his family’s village after his father dies. During the customary ten-day period of mourning, he reconnects with Balya (Suraaj Suman), a farmer who is also his childhood friend. Their relationship develops within a community shaped by kinship, loss and family expectations, including pressure to marry.
The title is also released in English as Cactus Pears. Official sources identify the film as a Marathi-language rural story about two men from farming families. Jayshri Jagtap is also among the principal cast named by the film’s official materials.
How does grief shape the romance?
Mourning is not simply the backdrop to Anand and Balya’s relationship: it gives the story its time frame and places Anand back among family and community obligations. The romance unfolds alongside the work of grieving and the expectations attached to returning home. That context makes the central question more particular than whether two people will fall in love: it is also how intimacy can take shape within a life already structured by family ties and social pressure.

It does, however, describe the balance at the heart of the premise: a story set during mourning that attends to the possibility of affection and connection.
Why is its rural queer setting significant?
Kanawade has described the story as semi-autobiographical. Speaking about his own experience as a gay man growing up in a Mumbai slum, he has contrasted it with the lives of upper-class friends and said he wanted to represent queer characters beyond city life. As he put it, “queer experiences aren’t limited to city life.”

That intention gives the setting cultural and social weight. Anand and Balya’s lives are connected to farming families, rural community and expectations around marriage; queerness is not presented in the official framing as an exclusively urban experience. Kanawade has also described the film’s interest in parental acceptance through unconditional love rather than education or exposure. These are the filmmaker’s aims, not a single prescribed interpretation of the film.
What recognition has the film received?
Sabar Bonda premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and won the competition’s World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic. The official film site reproduces the award statement by jury members Ava Cahen, Wanuri Kahiu and Daniel Kaluuya, who praised the film’s intimate emotional perspective. The award is a notable festival milestone for Kanawade’s feature debut.
