Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue are related but distinct transformations. Super Saiyan God is the red-haired godly form; Super Saiyan Blue—officially also called Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (SSGSS)—is a Saiyan who has the power of Super Saiyan God and has become a Super Saiyan.
What is the difference between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue?
The simplest distinction is in the name: Super Saiyan God is the godly transformation, while Blue combines that God power with the Super Saiyan transformation. Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ profile describes Goku’s SSGSS form as “a Saiyan who has the power of Super Saiyan God and has become a Super Saiyan.” That is a concise description of the relationship, not a complete technical rule for every later story or continuity.
| Comparison | Super Saiyan God | Super Saiyan Blue |
|---|---|---|
| Transformation concept | The godly transformation | God power combined with the Super Saiyan state |
| Name | Super Saiyan God | Super Saiyan Blue; also Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (SSGSS) |
| Common visual cue | Red hair | Blue hair |
| Story placement | Introduced in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods | Appears later in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F |
The colors are useful visual shorthand, but the official sources cited here do not give a canonical explanation for their symbolism.
Why is Super Saiyan Blue also called SSGSS?
SSGSS abbreviates Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. The longer name describes the idea behind Blue: a Saiyan with Super Saiyan God power takes on the Super Saiyan transformation. “Super Saiyan Blue” is the more familiar shorthand, while official franchise material also uses the full SSGSS name. The two names refer to the same form, not two separate transformations.

Battle of the Gods: Super Saiyan God
Toei Animation dates Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods to 2013. The film introduces Goku’s Super Saiyan God form.
Resurrection F: Super Saiyan Blue
Toei dates Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F to 2015 and describes Goku’s forms progressing from Super Saiyan God to Super Saiyan Blue. Dragon Ball Super followed the story material of the two films. Toei says the series began airing in Japan on Fuji TV on July 5, 2015, and takes place after the Dragon Ball Z Buu saga.

The names establish a relationship between the forms, but they do not establish a universal numerical multiplier. The official descriptions cited here do not give an exact God-to-Blue ratio, and a blanket claim about which form is stronger in every depiction would go beyond what those sources establish. Comparisons should be tied to a particular continuity and scene rather than presented as a fixed franchise-wide number.
