Saturday Night Live opened its January 20, 2024, episode with a courthouse-themed Trump sketch. James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump after a court appearance in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial; Chloe Fineman appeared first as Trump attorney Alina Habba. The sketch then mixed legal-team jokes with campaign references and the line, “I’m more cognitive than ever.”
What happens in the cold open?
The sketch begins with Fineman’s Alina Habba, making the defense team and Habba’s courtroom experience part of the joke. Johnson then appears as Trump, speaking to the media outside court. From there, the scene moves between the legal news of the week and Trump’s campaign activity after the Iowa caucuses.

Its premise is a comic press appearance, not a transcript or factual account of what Trump said in court. The official SNL clip describes Johnson’s character as speaking to the media after appearing in court for the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial.
Who plays Trump and Alina Habba?
- Donald Trump: James Austin Johnson.
- Alina Habba: Chloe Fineman.
The first cold open of 2024 aired on January 20, 2024. The official SNL YouTube upload is titled “Trump Courthouse Cold Open – SNL.”
What does “more cognitive than ever” mean in the sketch?
Johnson’s Trump character says, “I’m more cognitive than ever.” The line is a satirical riff on public comments about Trump’s cognitive ability. It belongs to the character’s comedy routine; it is not a clinical assessment or a verbatim statement by Donald Trump.
What was the real court case behind the setup?
The setting was the second E. Jean Carroll defamation trial. The sketch borrows that court appearance as its backdrop, then uses it for parody alongside jokes about a gag order, the campaign, and political rivals. Those comic references should not be mistaken for reporting on the trial or a reliable account of the proceedings.
