Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine: Chris Evans’s surprise appearance is not a return as Captain America. He plays Johnny Storm, the Human Torch he portrayed in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). In July 2024, Evans said Ryan Reynolds invited him back with a text about reprising a role from 20 years earlier—and that Reynolds’s humor made the idea feel safe.
Who does Chris Evans play in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Evans plays Johnny Storm, not Steve Rogers. Johnny is the Human Torch from the earlier Fox-era Fantastic Four films. In the movie, Deadpool and Wolverine encounter him in the Void; Deadpool initially mistakes him for Captain America before the identity is revealed, according to Gizmodo’s account of the scene.
The role connects two different chapters of Evans’s superhero career: Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four (2005) and its 2007 sequel, followed by Steve Rogers / Captain America in later Marvel films. The Los Angeles Times also identifies Evans’s cameo character as Johnny Storm and names those earlier films.
Why did Evans agree to return?
Evans said Reynolds, a friend, contacted him directly. “He just shot me a text saying, ‘Listen, might be a long shot, but would you have any interest in reprising something from 20 years ago?’ I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course,’” Evans recalled in comments reported by Gizmodo and Popverse.

Reynolds’s tone mattered as much as the invitation. Evans explained that the actor’s self-aware humor can disarm the audience before it has a chance to make a joke about a returning character: “His self-awareness makes him almost invincible. He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke, so if you’re going to revisit a character and you have to find a way to make it work, Ryan’s humor makes just about everything work, so you feel an automatic sense of safety.”
Evans put the personal trust more plainly: “Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch.” He also described his memories of the earlier films as “nothing but fond memories,” according to Popverse.

What did Evans say about filming the cameo?
The shoot was brief. “I just had to fly in real quick, do a couple days of filming, and fly out,” Evans said in the Gizmodo report. He contrasted that quick return with the more deliberative process of making the earlier Fantastic Four films.
The character’s rundown condition in the Void also meant the costume did not need to look pristine. That detail suits the cameo’s function: it brings Johnny back into the story without treating him as a polished, full-scale reintroduction. Evans summed up his own experience simply: “For me, it was pretty easy.”

How was the return revealed at SDCC?
The cameo was announced at the film’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Popverse reported. Gizmodo reported that Evans made a surprise appearance alongside other cameo performers at the film’s “Celebration of Life” panel. The July 2024 coverage followed the movie’s opening, so the character reveal was being discussed as a spoiler rather than a pre-release casting announcement.
