In a November 2023 interview reported by PerthNow, Tim Robards said he had been coping with back pain, arthritis and other longstanding health problems. He also said he had completed three months of double-strength antibiotic treatment for a suspected spinal infection shortly before appearing on SAS Australia. The account was attributed to an interview with The Daily Telegraph; it does not establish a confirmed infection or describe Robards’ health today.

What Tim Robards said about his health

PerthNow’s 2 November 2023 report quoted Robards describing “pretty horrific injuries and some chronic stuff.” He said his back was a particular problem, and the article also described arthritis and back pain as part of his health account.

Robards said: “My back is screwed, and just before going on the show, I went through three months of double strength antibiotic treatment for a suspected spinal infection.” The report says the infection was suspected; it does not say it was confirmed or provide clinical records.

How back pain affected everyday parenting

Robards described difficulty with ordinary movements while caring for his daughter, Elle: “I struggle to bend down and pick up Elle’s stuff off the ground. I struggle to bend down and give her a hug. It is hard work.” The statement conveys the practical effect he described at the time, rather than establishing how he feels now.

How the disclosure relates to SAS Australia

The November disclosure appeared in coverage of Robards’ participation in the 2023 season of SAS Australia. PerthNow reported that he passed the selection process alongside Matthew Mitcham. An earlier New Idea profile, published on 9 October 2023, also discussed chronic back pain and earlier injuries, and quoted Robards on wanting to regain confidence in his body.

In a 2023 cast profile, Mediaweek quoted Robards calling the course “Traumatic. It was a rude awakening.” He also described “the constant state of gruelling stress, fear and anxiety the DS create.” Those are his descriptions of the course, not medical findings about his condition.

What is—and is not—established

The published accounts document what Robards said in 2023 about injuries, back pain, arthritis, treatment for a suspected infection and the effect of bending on parenting. They do not independently verify the medical details, establish a diagnosis of spinal infection, or give a reliable update on his health since then.

A separate So Dramatic! report on 18 December 2023 described an injury during filming. It quoted Robards saying a doctor had told him he partially tore his abductor and risked a full tear if he continued. That was a separate reported incident, not confirmation of the suspected spinal infection mentioned in November.
