The 2023 SAS Australia premiere, “Surrender,” aired on 9 October 2023 and opened with a burial-box task and a 10-kilometre desert run. The first recruit to leave was Jason Akermanis, who chose to withdraw after reporting a foot injury, despite being cleared by the on-site medic, according to PerthNow’s episode report.
What happened in the SAS Australia premiere?
The episode began with the recruits placed in boxes under desert sand, with a limited oxygen supply. After the task, they faced a 10-kilometre run to base camp in the heat. PerthNow reported that Cassie Sainsbury was the first to struggle during the run.
The premiere then introduced the recruits’ personal histories and the pressures they brought to the course. Ant Middleton, the chief instructor, described the process to PerthNow this way: “We strip you down and then we build you up, that’s the difference here.”
What did Cassie Sainsbury disclose?
Sainsbury spoke about spending three years in a Colombian prison and the fear and trauma she connected to that experience. She also discussed past suicidal thoughts. These were personal disclosures within the episode, not a reason to sensationalize her experience or reduce it to a dramatic moment.

PerthNow reported that Craig McLachlan spoke about the public response to the assault allegations made against him in 2018; Peter Bol discussed doping allegations; and Stephanie Rice referred to a social-media controversy. These are accounts of what the recruits said on the programme, not findings about the underlying allegations.

Who left SAS Australia in the premiere?
Jason Akermanis was the first recruit to leave the course. PerthNow reported that he said his foot was injured, was cleared by the on-site medic, and then chose to retire. His departure was a voluntary withdrawal, not a medical removal.
