Ryan Moloney announced on 27 June 2024 that he would leave Neighbours later that year after 30 years playing Jarrod “Toadfish” Rebecchi. The announcement confirmed Moloney’s departure from the on-screen role, but it did not reveal whether Toadie would die, leave Ramsay Street permanently or return in future episodes.
What did Ryan Moloney announce?
In a statement published by Paramount Australia & New Zealand on 27 June 2024, Moloney said: “After 30 years playing Toadie, I will be leaving Ramsay Street.” He was announcing an exit from his long-running acting role, not an immediate end to all involvement with the production.

Moloney also said he had begun training as a director and had filmed his first episode behind the camera. A Channel 4 biography published on 8 January 2026 later described him as having directed episodes of Neighbours.
Was Toadie killed off or written out for good?
The 2024 announcement did not settle Toadie’s fictional fate. Moloney said he could not reveal what would happen, raising both the possibility of death and the prospect of occasional appearances. Executive producer Jason Herbison likewise left the door open: “The street won’t be the same without seeing him every week, however there’s every chance he will pop back in the future.” That was a possibility, not confirmation of a return.

ABC News’ 28 June 2024 report also described the ending as unresolved at the time. The sources cited here do not establish Toadie’s exact final broadcast episode or verify a later return, so the announcement should not be read as proof of either outcome.
How the “Death in the Outback” story fitted in
In a 29 July 2024 interview with Back to the Bay, Moloney discussed filming his final scenes and Toadie’s mental-health struggles in the “Death in the Outback” storyline. The interview described the story as a major part of the exit build-up, while keeping its exact outcome under wraps. It is context about the story leading into the departure, not confirmation of how Toadie’s story ultimately ended.

How long had Moloney played Toadie?
Moloney’s association with the show began before Toadie became a regular character. The Guardian’s 27 June 2024 account says he appeared once in 1994 as Cyborg, returned as Toadfish in 1995 and became a permanent cast member in 1996. ABC also dates Toadie’s arrival to 1995.
The programme ended in 2022 and later returned in a revival, but that history does not change what the 2024 announcement established: Moloney was stepping away from playing Toadie, while the character’s future remained open.
